Tuckersmith Township council was informed Tues day night by Diane Durnin. the recreation director. Mrs. Durnin applied for the grant during the summer to be used primari ly to prepare and implement a program of aquatics and fitness for special needs groups. She listed special needs groups to include the men tally retarded, both children and adults; senior citizens, stroke patients; and the physically disabled, both children and adults. She said activities provid ed at the Vanastra Recrea tion Centre would include recreation swimming, therapeutic recreation, learn to swim classes. efatllr dance FAIR Admission Only $2.50 Per Person MUSIC BY COUNTRY UNLIMITED Tickets Available At Gord's Variety, Becker's, Norm Whiting's, Jerry MacLean's And Any Fair Board Members COUNTRY AND WESTERN SOUTH HURON REC CENTRE Continuous Entertainment By 10 Big Bands fitness programs and social activities. Mrs. Durnin to qualify for the grant, extensive work and alterations would have to be made before January 31 at the Centre such as emergency exits, ramps, washrooms and changing rooms made larger to ac commodate wheelchairs, lower clothes racks, por table ramps to swimming pool, grab bars around edge of pool, lowering of hair dryers, pool wheelchairs, blacktopping of outside walkways. She said to get the cost es timates of the amount of money needed to do the alterations it would be necessary to hire an architect or an engineer to determine what was needed, how to do it and give an es timate of cost. She said she would apply for a Wintario grant and a recreation grant for com munity centre to help pay for the alterations and was hopeful these would pay the •full cost so that the township would not have to pay. Reeve Ervin Sillery questioned whether enough handicapped people would use the facility to warrant the expense. Mrs. Durnin said there would be, in fact three mentally handicapped people are using the pool now. Councillor Robert Drum mond said, “You want this stu'dy started as soon as possible,” and he made the motion to hire an engineer to draw up the plans for the alterations to meet regulations for the han dicapped. Clerk Jack .McLachlan was authorized to investigate the name of an engineer to do the job. Mrs. Durnin said further grants would be sought to carry on the program when the $19,000 runs out in nine months. In other business council set the date for the first meeting of the new municipal council following the election Tuesday, December 5 at 8 p.m. Road superintendent, Allan Nicholson, was authorized to order a new six-inch pump, five horsepower motor, plus pipe and other material needed for Egmondville well No. 2. The new pump is expected to pump 47 gallons per minute and the cost will be ap proximately $3,000. This will overcome the shortage of water the Egmondville residents have had due to the.worn out old pump. Applications for building permits were approved for Jacob Thalen at Vanastra. addition to existing building provided it meets re quirements for distance from road allowance; Jim Papple, RR , Seaforth, addi tion to barn: Robert Fotheringham. Mrs. Robin (Ruth) Gates of Vanstra has replaced Mrs. Tugwell. Clerk Jack McLachlan was given permission to at tend the annual conference of the Lake Huron zone of the Ontario Municipal recreation association at Goderich on October 28. and the meeting of local clerks and treasurers in Goderich on October 12. There will be no need for council sessions not to be conducted properly in future as information on conduc tion of meetings, procedural by-laws and other informa tion, has been received by the clerk and copies will be given to all members of council, thanks to the Ministry of treasury, economi c-s and i n - tergovernmerttlil'hf fairs. Moffat Lake Explorations seeking oil and gas in the township will instal a com pressor site on the north west corner of Lot 11, plan 23. at Vanastra. The clerk will seek prices on having the tax bills done by a computer system as most other municipalities in the area do. as it is con sidered cheaper than hiring extra office help. The Huron County Health Unit authorized the council to have the former Huron Acoustics property at Vanastra cleaned up as it is considered a health hazard. The plant burned down about two years ago and no attempt has been made to clear the rubble which is an eyesore. Ontario Hydro notified council it has replaced all the bulbs in the street lights at Vanastra and 20 of the new lights have been broken by vandals. Hydro refuses to replace these as it is only responsible for those lights that burn out due to normal wear and tear. Council will have to foot the bill and do the job at a cost of about $130. with the work to be done the first week in October, according to a motion made by Coun cillor Frank Falconer. Council was irked because one male resident at Vanastra said he knew who was responsible for the van dalism of the bulbs but refused to identify them at this time.
