Staff photo Serving South Huron North Middlesex & North Lambton Since 1873 Somebody mixed up Exhibits increase Gives Garden Party weather for Fair For the first time in many years the sun shone brightly and warmly on the annual Kirk ton Fall F’air, Saturday. Master of ceremonies Lee Paul described the weather perfectly saying, "it’s Garden Party weather for the Fall Fair. Everybodys’ here in shirt sleeves. Its’ a strange sight for our fair.” The excellent weather may have cut down on the attendance as area farmers were busy harvesting beans. Secretary June Robinson said the number of exhibitors was up but at least one large exhibitor of previous years did not show. Mrs. Chas Baillie won the Simpson Sears and Canadian Canners specials as the top contestant in baking and canning. Others showing well' in these two classes were Mrs. Keith Stephens, Mrs. Lome Fell and Mrs. Joe Cod- dington. In a small showing of flowers, Mrs. Tom Hern was the major prize winner. Taking top honours in house plants were Mrs. Dorothy Switzer and Mrs. Raymond Switzer. Judging was held in three categories of field crops. Don Bragg was the winner in wheat followed by Eldon Westman, Bill Arthur, Albert Weenink, Burns Blackler, Don Nairn, Ewart Crago and Bryan Bertrand. Winners in white beans were Gerald Wallis, Ewart Crago, Jim Nairn, Bryan Bertrand, Don Nairn, Ken Bearss and Gerald Francis. Best in the corn com­ petition were Ken Bearss, John Simpson, Ewart Crago, Burns Blackler, Bob Stephens, William Arthur, Eldon Westman, Jim Nairn" and Gerald Francis. The winner in ladies, men’s and childrens wear was Nancy Perry while the best in sewing, knitting and crocheting were Lena Kirkland, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Miller McCurdy, G. Poel, Pauline Morrison, Mrs. Agnes Davis, Iris Gunton, Wilma Davis and Florence Heard. The Anderson Carry-on club award for most points in young teens wear went to Nancy Perry Parkinson. Winners in citizens section Miller Peterson, Mrs. Lena Kirkland and Agnes Davis while Britnell was best with 4-H articles. The tube paintings winner was Burns Blackler. Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Jaques, Woodham were hostesses to a party Saturday evening. There were other social gatherings to honour the occasion. Mr. & Mrs. Laverne Doupe of Belleville visited Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Herman Paynter. Mrs. Don Barber, Collingwood spent the weekend with Mrs. Joan McCormick. The champion animal was purchased by Kirk ton Veterinary Clinic for 80 cents per pound liveweight. In the 4-H beef class, Norman Bilyea was the best showman and the top valves were shown by Doug Cook and Dan Shute. The top dairy showman was June Simpson and Laurie Simpson and Stephanie Hartwick showed the best claves. Heather Bilyea champion horse showman and grand champion of the 4- H livestock showmanship classes.
