T-A photo Mixed sports This is one time of the year when summer sports are winding down and fall and winter activities are just getting underway. On the area ball front, the Kirkton midget girls appear to be the only team still playing an active role. While still in contention in Western Ontario Association playoffs, the Kirkton girls have already won the Provincial Women’s Softball association A CC championship. The Kirkton gals turned in an impressive record in taking the PWSA title. They won their last eight games in disposing of four teams in quick fashion. They defeated Penetang in the finals by scores of 11-2 in Kirkton, Friday and 11-9 in Penetang, Sunday. The long trips for the visiting teams in each instance probably had an effect on the outcome. Congratulations, girls. You may as well carry on and the WOAA crown to the rest of your laurels. On the soccer front, the Exeter Centennials are waiting playoff action in the Ausable senior league. A league meeting to chart playoffs is being held tonight, Thursday in Taxandria. The Centennials finished in second place and are expected to meet West Williams and Forest in a round-robin series. The other set has Nairn, Taxan dria and Grand Bend kicking off. Coaches Ron Bogart and Doug Ellison of the two football teams at South Huron District High School are busy readying their clubs for Huron-Perth action which starts next week. Bogart will be a busy fellow for a couple of months as football and hockey go at the same time. He has called the first practice of the Exeter junior Hawks for this Sunday afternoon. It will be held at the Ilderton arena at 2 p.m. any junior eligible players in the area are welcome. Bring your own stick and equipment. The annual Exeter Fall Fair will occupy the Rec Centre facilities for the weekend of September 23, 24, 25. Kirkton wins PWSA title Great showing A member of the Exeter saddle club turned excellent performances at last weekend’s horse show held in conjunction with the Western Fair in London. Joanne Malone won one event in the western show Friday and came back with three more red ribbons Saturday. In Sunday’s action she won first prizes in ladies pleasure horse, junior pleasure horse and western pleasure horse with Miss Sundial. It’s believed this is the first time a junior com petitor has won the top prize in four events. Congratulations, Joanne. Kirkton won Provincial Women’s Softball Association CC cham pionship over the week end with two straight victories over Penetang. The Kirkton girls scored an impressive 12-1 victory before a large crowd Friday night and wrapped up the championship with an 11-9 win in Penetang Sunday evening. The new provincial champions are still in the hunt for the Western Ontario Athletic Association championship. They downed St. Marys 3-2 in the first game of a best-of- five series. The third game will be played in Kirkton Monday night. The winner will advance to the WOAA finals. In the final series opener against Penetang, Kirkton hurler Patti Down allowed only three hits while recording seven strikeouts. Her team-mates were strong at the plate with a total of 16 base hits in their six turns at the plate. Sheila Penhale was the top Kirkton slugger with two doubles and a single. Jayne Dougall carried the heavy bat with a home run and triple to her credit. Sue Schaefer, Patti Down and Bonnie Westlake each contributed two singles to the winning cause. Getting one hit Heather Johnson doubles MacLean and Rose Miller singles. In Sunday’s game the Kirkton club had a little more trouble, probably due to the long trip. Kirk ton scored three runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 11-5, but, Penetang failed to give up easily and scored four times in their last trip to bat and had the tying runs on base when the final out was recorded. Sheila Penhale with a home run, two doubles and a single paced Kirkton to the championship win. Sue Schaefer was close behind with three hits. Patti Down contributed' two base hits while one hit each were added by Pam Johnson, Kelly Kernick, Jayne Dougall, Julianne MacLean, Kim Heather and Rosemary Miller. Patti Down was again the winning pitcher. This time she gave up nine hits. Six Kirkton errors helped keep Penetang in contention. The early game was quite a thrill, Which made the local fans agree That though the players might lack skill 'And second base was on a hill, The game was fun to see. The game has changed from days of yore, With sliders flying past each bat, With players hitting, 204, And fifteen innings with no score, And dreadful things like that. And now, much to the fans’ dismay And unearned run’s big attack; Which makes me sure if Doubleday Could see this boring game they play, He’d take the whole thing back.
