CONGRATULATIONS! - The Zurich Buckeyes continued to have a successful summer of fastball as they defeated South Zorra 5-1 to win the fastball tourney held over the weekend in Zurich. Halter classes — 10:00 a.m. Performance Classes — 1:00 p.m. Refreshment Booth - Toilet Facilities - Acres of Free Parking Admission $1.00 (Children under 12 years admitted free) Zurich triumphs in local fastball tourney The third annual men’s fastball tournament spon­ sored by the Zurich parks and recreation board was a highly successful event with the home town Buckeyes taking the “A” cham­ pionship in a well played game Sunday afternoon. The tournament which was originally scheduled to be a one day event became a two day affair as torrential rains swept the area and forced the cancellation of games scheduled for Saturday afternoon and evening, the fans with many thrills as • the local squad won 5-1. , -The Buckeyes were led by the pitching of Brian Hodgins who pitched a solid game and who received support at the plate and in the field. One player who thrilled the crowd of around 200 was Jeff O’Brien who stole home and who made a shoe-string When the event resum ed Sunday afternoon it was the Buckeyes and the team from South Zorra who provided catch for the final out of the game. On the offensive front, Mike Clarke hit a home run that sent the fans from their seats. The Buckeyes faced stiff competition on their way to the title with home squad squeaking by Embro 6-5 in their first game of the event. Bob Farquhar went the distance on the mound for the victory. In the championship semi­ final Hodgins recorded his first win of the tournament as the Buckeyes edged Clinton 3-2. Lieury takes "B" title For the second year in a row the squad from Lieury took the “B” title and the Shaws dairy store trophy with a 7-3 victory over Goderich. On their way to the title, Lieury lost to Walton- Brussels 8-7, and defeated Elmira 6-1. In other games played, Clinton defeated Goderich 8- 4, South Zorra defeated .Elmira 11-3, Goderich got by Embro 4-3 and South Zorra defeated Walton-Brussels 1-0. Tournament sponsors were pleased with the event as large crowds were in attendance for all games. The Kirkton midget girls have reached the Provincial Women’s Softball Association semi-final round after eliminating Simcoe and Waterloo in straight games. The Kirkton club now , meets Stouffville with the j second and third contests in . a best-of-five series slated, for Kirkton Saturday af-| ternoon with the first game! t going at 1 p.m. They also ’ meet Tavistock this week in the first round of Western Ontario playoffs. The Kirkton girls ran wild in a scoring way against Simcoe with both games ending by authority of the 15 run mercy rule. The scores were 27-1 and 29-3 for i Kirkton. Kirkton was awarded the first game of the series in I Stouffville Sunday by default I when the home team failed to field nine players. In the first game against I Simcoe, Kirkton erupted for I 13 runs in the sixth inning and the game was called. ; Kelly Kernick led the winners at the plate with six hits in as many times at the plate including a home run. Next in line in the 22 hit | attack with three hits apiece I were Vivian Doupe and Sue I Schaefer. Julieanne MacLean, Bonnie Westlake and Terri Brintnell each collected two hits and Kim Heather, Sheila > Penhale, Patti Down and Carrie Stroud were good for1 one hit each. ! Natalie Stroud with four I hits with the best Kirkton batter in the second game. I Julianne MacLean, Vivian Doupe and Sheila Penhale were next with three hits I each and Pam Johnson smashed a home run. Get- , ting one hit each were Kelly Kernick, Sue Schaefer, Lori Iredale, Rosemary Miller and Patti Down. The first Kirkton win over Waterloo by a score of 5-2 was aided by five Waterloo errors. Kim Heather hit a home run, Kelly Kernick added a triple and were delivered by Penhale, Rosemary and Jayne Dougall.
