Get parking suggestions Putting a parking building on the beach parking lot is one of several secret proposals Grand Bend is looking at to solve the village’s chronic parking problems. The suggestion was added to a list of ideas Tuesday night that council declined to make public. “These are just tentative proposals we are looking at. They are just general ideas,11 said Reeve Bob Sharen. The beach parking lot idea was raised by councillor Keith Crawford. “I think it would make sense to put a second tier of parking down by the beach. If it is done right it can look attractive,” said Crawford. Deputy reeve Bob Simp son strongly apposed the idea. “Let me know when you’re going to start so I can put up a for sale sign. The taxes would have to double to pay for it. You can’t put up that kind of a project and pay for it on a two month operation.” Councillor Bill Baird said the village already had the land and it was where people wanted to park. Councillor Harold Green agreed. “I’ve seen some damn nice parking lots. It is a lot of land that we own and right where we want it.” Reeve Bob Sharen said people might react strongly against a parking building being built in the beach area. “Can you see us getting away with that,” he said. Green agreed that people in the area would complain about it because it was something new. “I think it can be done at tractively. The main point is, I don’t thing we should writeit off,” said Crawford. The proposal was added to the list of other identified ideas. Professional Care for your car I 9 9 Limited-Time Specials GB council changes mind, decides to go to metric Grand Bend council decid ed to join the metric system Tuesday night despite an earlier decision to stay with the imperial system. Council passed a bylaw allowing senior levels of government to bill the Firm appeals OMB ruling ofGerplex Limited owner 11 lots in Grand is appealing an Ontario Municipal Board decision which upheld a village zoning bylaw changing the lots from commercial to residential zoning. The OMB decision dated July 27 said since there is no municipal sewer service available, it is poor planning to prezone any lands. Any development should follow the installation of services and then only with site plan agreements and controls. The OMB also said that to zone the lots commercial is to invite development without controls because there is no official plan for the area at this time. “The evidence is that the company does not have any plan of development at this time.We agree with the municipal planner, that to prezone these lands ‘Com mercial’, would be bad planning,’’ The lots owned by Gerplex were originally all zoned commercial under a 1958 zoning bylaw. The company claims the decision by the OMB didn’t take intq con sideration that sewer con struction would take place in the near future. “...it is now known that easements are being acquired and plans have been drawn to be let for tender on the first of October, 1978 for sewer construction to commence in the Spring of 1979, something which the Responder (Grand Bend) knew or ought to have known at the time of the hearing but which was not lead in evidence, ’’ Gerplex’s notice of appeal said. Village reeve Bob Sharen said there was no misrepresentation on Grand Bend’s part to the OMB hearing. The board was informed the earliest starting date for sewers would be April 1979. Sharen said he had heard that tenders might be let in October, but the information didn’t even come from a government official. No firm starting date for sewer construction has been established, he said. Council decided to ask that costs for the appeal be awarded to the village. municipality for services in metric units The original agreements were for im perial units and the bylaw was required for the change in billing. At the last regular meeting council decided not to pass the bylaw In other business. Council objected to draft approval being given to Green Forest Estates planned subdivision unless there was a three- party agreement between the developer, Stephen, and Grand Bend regarding water supply and sewers. Council learned that the Ministry of Industry and Tourism would not be able to carry out a full feasibility study on harbor iim provements in Grand Bend. However, a mini-study will be carried out. The Ministry of Housing informed council that there had been few replies to the assistant housing survey The ministry suggested more publicity and adver tising be done Council re jected the idea. Harold Green told council there was still problems with a shortage of life guards for the rest of the summer. Lifeguards have quit and in the future there should be contracts signed. Green suggested. He said he will try to get people to fill in for the remaining time. There have been 11 r 'ft I fl ONE WEEK ONLY Oil Change Filter— ■ and ■Lube ! !
