HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1978-08-03, Page 11Local swim team fourth in meet held at Goderich Saturday morning the Exeter Swim Team travelled to Goderich for their first away meet of the summer. The team placed fourth out of the eight teams competing with 1'74 points. Goderich won the meet with 356*2 points, Kincardine ran second with 237 points and Elmira followed close behind with 212* 2 points. The Exeter swimmers who did attend the meet did well However, the team lacked its Unouncement usual depth as only 33 swimmers went to Goderich. In the 8 and under division Sharon Boersma brought home a third infronta fourth in back and a third in breast. Leanne Jennison also placed in the top 6 in her events. In the 9 and 10 age division Annette Vermaeten was one of the outstanding swimmers with a second in butterfly. She also placed in the top six in back crawl. Liz Cottrell won the butterfly, and placed fourth and fifth in the breast stroke and front respec­ tively. Tina Brand led the age division with firsts in front Dashwood wins over Crediton Frederick J. S. Pearce, Ontario Land Surveyor, is pleased to announce that James A. Macin­ tosh, B. Sc., O.L.S., has successfully completed his professional ex­ aminations in land sur­ veying and has received his commission from the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors. Mr. Macintosh is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Macintosh of London, formerly of Biddulph Township. He received his degree from Erindale College of the University of Toronto, specializing in survey science. Previous to serving a two year term of articles with the Stratford survey firm he obtained a number of years of ex­ perience with Ontario Hydro, working in photogrametry; and with the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Resources, where fie was assistant to the hydrographer in flood data management. Mr. Macintosh is a resident of Stratford and is the president of the Stratford Jaycees. He will continue his professional career with F. J. S. Pearce, Ltd., On­ tario Land Surveyors, with offices at 165 Huron Street in Strat­ ford. Mr. Macintosh's emphasis will be land development and plan­ ning in the Perth County area. Dashwood downed Crediton 9-4 Tuesday night in a district Western Ontario Athletic Association pee wee playoff baseball game. The second - game of the best-of-live series will be played in Crediton tonight, Thursday. The third goes in Dashwood Tuesday and the fourth if necessary in Crediton, August 8. Dashwood scored single runs in the first and second innings and added two more in the third and were never headed. ■ Tony Smith walked in the Dashwood first and scored on the first of four hits from the bat of Dave Hayter. In the second, Trevor Johnston drew a walk with two out and scored on hits by Scott Rader and Travis Davis. Hits by Dave Hayter, Gary Smith, Doug Schade and Trevor Johnston sent two Dashwood runs home in the third. Crediton hit the scoreboard in the fourth with hits by Gerry Lamport, Robert Mitchell} Scott Miller, Ken Payne and Alan Payne providing the power for a three run outburst. In the Dashwood fourth, Dave Hayter singled and scored. Doug Schade and Trevor Johnston scored in the fifth and Tony Smith and Dave Hayter counted the final runs in the sixth. The fourth and final Crediton marker crossed the plate in the seventh. Ken Payne singled and after moving up on a walk came home on Eugene Glanville’s single. Travis Davis was the winning pitcher for Dash­ wood while Robert Mitchell toiled on the mound for Crediton. crawl and breast stroke and a fifth in butterfly. Exeter’s strong age divisions, the 11 and 12 boys and girls did very well. Brenda Waldeck led the group with a second in back crawl and a third in butterfly and a fifth in front crawl. Mary Lynn Pryde came third in back crawl. Dave Bidtnes led the boys with a second in relay, a third in bVeast, a fourth in back, and a sixth in front crawl. Chris McLeod also placed in the top six in the front crawl. The relay led by Bidtnes placed second with Jack Vermaeten, Chris McLeod and John Wells also swim­ ming. Scott Batten came third in breast stroke in the 13 and 14 year old age division. Dannette McLeod put in a fine performance with a second in the individual medley, a first in back crawl and a second in the free-style relay. In the 15 and over girls’ open division, Exeter came away with a second and third. Kim Lang and Bobby Glover received these rib­ bons in breast stroke. Lang also scored a second in front crawl and Glover put a fine performance in to win a third in back crawl. Lang, Glover, McLeod, and Julie Hendrick com­ bined their talents to bring home a second in the free style relay. Joe Blommart, Paul Campbell, Scott Batten, and John Mol placed second in the 13 and 14 free style relay. This Saturday, Exeter will be hosting their second meet of the summer. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. andfc run till noon, Clinton* Seaforth, Mildmay, and Listowel will be attending the meet. Dougall and Patti Down In the deciding playoff There was good news and bad news this week for fans of the Kirkton midget girls fastball team. On the good news side of the ledger, the Kirkton gals wound up the regular season with two victories. Their complete league record is now 14 victories and only four defeats. Tuesday they edged Stratford 7-6 and Thursday night they triumphed over Tavistock by a score of 10-1. The sadder news came as the Kirkton club after winning the first game of a best-of-lhree series lost two straight to Goderich in PWSA playoff action. The scores were 11-9 and 13-7. Kirkton now drops to the CC division and will meet Simcoe with the first game tonight, Thursday in Kirkton at 7 p.m. Bonnie Westlake was the leading hitter in the league win over Stratford with two singles. Getting one hit each were Kim Heather, Sheila Penhale, Sue Schaeffer, Rose Mary Miller and Carrie Stroud. Patti Down was the win­ ning pitcher. She allowed Stratford only six hits while recording 10 strikeouts. Patti Down and Natalie Stroud combined for a four hit pitching effort as Kirkton bombed Tavistock 10-1. The top hitter* was Kim Heather with a triple and double to her credit. Adding singles were Patti Natalie Stroud, Schaefer, Rose Mary and Kelly Kernick. Goderich tied the series with a 13 hit attack on Kirkton hurler Patti Down and an 8-4 decision. Lori Iredale collected two of the six Kirkton hits. for 11 runs in the first inning against two Kirkton pit­ chers. Sharing in the Kirkton four hit total were Sheila Penhale, Kelly Kernick, Sue Schaefer and Vivian Doupe. For the first time in more than 10 years the local bowling club with the valuable assistance Exeter and area merchants will be sponsoring a Mer­ chants and Manufacturers doubles tournament. Manager Bruce Shaw said he expects the second game will be played in Exeter sometime over the week end. The Exeter youngsters finished in first place in the league standings with nine victories and three defeats. Other teams in the league were from Goderich, Dash­ wood and Seaforth. Due to an error in sorting out the classifications, Exeter will be competing in
