Times-Advocate, 1978-07-27, Page 16Page 16 Times-Advocate, July 27, 1978 New Canadian play proves winner at Country Playhouse The term “winner” in two different connotations best describes the first per formance of George Robertson’s new play “Two Below” at the Huron Country Playhouse Tuesday evening; two real “winners” meeting in a play that by the audience’s reaction was a winner. It was a close to capacity crowd that didn’t know what to expect, a feeling that was shared by director of the play Lynn Gorman, artistic director James Murphy and playwright Robertson, who was in attendance. The play which revolves around the interactions between a once successful management consultant but now a social exile and a fully liberated woman who’s fighting her own woman battle against the male chauvinist pigs of the world, receives energetic per formances from Heath Lamberts and Terry Tweed. The play which is the Playhouse’s 1970’s selection for its tribute to the decades is what could be called an earthy comedy, one that pulls no punches as it suc cessfully mixes two phenomena of the 7fi’s: the GRAND BEND AND DISTRICT NEWS Hold funeral for G.S. Mrs. Mae Halt has returned home after a three day stay in St. Joseph’s hospital, London. liberation of the female and the attempt of people to make some sense out of today’s world. Lamberts as Boris the recluse, gives definition to a character who is somewhat twisted by his own ad mittance, what-with his strange in-house rules, his relationship with a store dummy and his habitation in the bottom of a building that’s being torn down. Returning to the Playhouse after a six year absence, Ms. Tweed gives a solid performance as Nettie, the women’s libber who assaulted a policeman and who met Boris by climbing in through his living room window. She combines the j right degrees of hostility, vulnerability and com passion to work successfully with her male alter ego. Trader Selkirk as the police detective who was allegedly assaulted by Nettie gives a nicely overplayed performance. One of the best parts of this play has to be the set by Alistair MacRae which is by far, his best of the current Playhouse season. While the lack of a multiplicity of sets in this production somewhat dition of removed recluse’s cellent., Special effects are good, such as the shaking of one wall when the building is being torn down, the running water for the kitchen sink and the falling of a hunk of plaster from the ceiling. Considering it was the first performance, the play was surprisingly funny with only a few lines failing to have punch. A minute that drew a hilarious reaction from the crowd was Nettie’s .......... recollection of when coming Simon’s' “Goodbye"Girl upon a flasher in a laun- - dromat, she matched fire with fire. There are parallels bet ween “Two Below” and Neil I” with the Robertson production being more message oriented rather than playing it for a laugh r A a 0 Z) a HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXCITING VALUES NOW AVAILABLE REG. $15.9$ per sq. yd.
