Later in the afternoon, the champs had to come from behind to oust Blanshard. Exeter’s double-goal performances came from Andrew Winters, Blayne Epp, Scott Lovie and Jeff Van Haarlem. Singles were scored by Danny Morley and Lawrence Fink, with Steve Gould and Dennis Eisen- schink splitting the shut-out in goalkeeping duties. In league play on Monday, July 10, Steve Gould was the goal scorer when the Exeter Mosquitoes tied Lucan 1-1, with each team scoring in the second half of an evenly played game. On the same night, Exeter and Lucan played to a scoreless draw in squirt division soccer. Exeter’s best chance at a goal came in the first half on a penalty kick. But the Lucan keeper cleared it, and afterward neither side could get a break. The only other victory for Exeter’s young soccer players was collected last Wednesday night when Exeter overcame a tie to defeat Lucan 2-1 in a pee-wee division game. Phil DeHaan put the locals in front with a goal in the first half. Lucan’s reply to it came in the second with an excellent shot to the top corner of the net that beat keeper Rich Helm out of any chance at a save. But with about two minutes left, Exeter’s Doug Medd collected his club’s winning goal. midgets girls softball team won the South Perth ladies ball tournament on theKIRKTON MIDGETS WIN The Kirkton _ _ . ______ weekend. T-A photo Play three times this week Tigers beaten in two contests The Dashwood Tigers tackled a couple of southern squads this week and came up on the short end of the count in both instances. At home on Friday, they took a 12-9 loss at the hands of Tillsonburg and a night later in Walsingham they ended up losers by a narrow 5-4 margin. The Tigers started well against Tillsonburg with a two-run first inning, but the visitors came up with five of their own in the top of the second and never looked back, although the losers scored four times in the bottom of the ninth to make the count a little closer. Two errors and a double by Glen Thurman led to Dash wood’s two runs in the first. They added another in the second two in the fifth and four in the last inning. Losing pitcher Perry Stover was shocked for 16 hits by the Tillsonburg nine, but he retaliated by leading the Dashwood hitters with a pair of safeties, including a two-run homer in the fifth. Getting one safety each were Barry Baynham, John Hayter, Thurman, Noel Skinner, Kevin Bestard, Bob Hoffman. D. Pidock recorded nine strikeouts in going the distance for the winners, while Stover sent seven batters back to the bench via the strikeout route. In Saturday’s game at Walsingham, the Tigers again fell short in a ninth inning rally as they dropped the one-run contest to Senators. They scored twice in first inning on doubles Bob Hoffman and Perry Stover and a single by John Hayter and plated another marker in the fourth when Stover led off with a single and came home on a ground out and a single by Kevin Please turn to Page 11 hit and then with two out and a runner on third, Kelly Ker- nick slammed a base hit to score the winning tally. Meanwhile, the Exeter Greys were moving toward the final as they opened the tournament with a 7-5 win over Cromarty and followed that with a 17-4 drubbing of Mitchell and a 20-3 romp over Thorndale. In the Sunday night cham- . pionship game, Kirkton jumped into a 6-0 lead at the end of the third and appeared to be heading for an easy win. However, Exeter rebound ed for five runs in the fifth before Kirkton added two in surance tallies in the sixth. Kelly Kernick topped the winners’ batters with six hits in the tournament for a .545 average, while Carrie Stroud hit three safeties. Patti Down and Sue Schaefer had averages of 333. Winning the consolation round of the tournament was the Cromarty entry. They nipped Lucan 14-12 in the final. A feature of the tourna ment was an appearance of the Kitchener Kieswetters, one of Canada’s top female teams. They played an all- star aggregation from the South Perth league and won 12-0.
