"I’m glad I’m not a kid. you can't do anything.’’ mused Reeve Si Simmons this week after council took steps to halt dangerous driv ing practices in the area of the rec centre. Deputy-Reeve Don MacGregor broached the subject, saying he had com plaints from area residents about the fact young drivers were using the paving lot as a "speedway" and entering onto Wellington St. in a dangerous manner. Several ideas were presented to eliminate the problem, ranging from reduced speed limits, speed bumps, stop signs and more police surveillance. It was finally decided to instal a speed bump at the entrance onio Wellington St. to keep an eye on the problem. In other business this week, council: Approved hiring a typist for the clerk's office for the summer at “close to minimum wage". The re quest was made by Clerk Liz Bell in view of the fact her two present staff members. Brian Parsons and Laurie Bichard, will both be married and therefore away for parts of the summer. Learned, in reply to a question from Councillor Fuller, that letters will be going out to some residents this week regarding the changes in the house numbering system. Coun- Will recall students Declining enrolment at Medway High School at Arva has prompted Middlesex County Board of Education to consider another move to stop sen ding students outside the county. This time the target is St. Marys District Collegiate where 87 residents of Middlesex at tend classes. Trustees voted June 5 to authorize Director of Education John Gummow to notify the Perth County board that Middlesex wishes to enter negotiations. Ad ministrators told the board that by 1980, Medway would be able to accommodate all students from northeast Middlesex, including those now enrolled at St. Marys but administrators did not make a recommendation to that: effect until a public meeting can gather input from parents. Enrolment at Medway is expected to sag from 1073 in September, 1978 to 919 by September. 1982. Inspection 'best ever' The annual inspection of 2923 Huron-Middlesex Cadet Corps was held Thursday evening at the Huron Park rec centre. Ian Sweet of Exeter and Carol Dejonge, Woodham were named the top male and female cadets while Bill Simmons, Exeter and Connie Little, Huron Park were named the most improved cadets. Agreed to pay the required fee of $150 to have a private member’s bill presented to the Legislature to repeal a bill passed there in 1899 which exempts farm land in Exeter from some taxation. MPP Jack Riddell will pre sent the bill and the govern ment will provide the legal a n d prepa ra tory work necessary for its drafting. Turned down a request for a grant from the Huron Historical Society. Decided to hold only one meeting per month during the months of July and August. Only Councillors Fuller and Wright opposed the suggestion presented by Reeve Simmons.
