birthday in July.
The program committee,

Exeter ladies see
historical houses
The June meeting of the
Evening unit,Exeter U.C.W.
was a bus trip Wednesday
June 7 to historical houses in
Toronto, and to the
McMichael Art Gallery at
Kleinberg.
The ladies left the church
at 7:30 a.m. with lovely
weather and after beating
the rush hour traffic of
Toronto arrived at the first
stop, The Grange at the
Ontario Art Gallery.
The Grange House was
built in 1817 by D’Arcy
Boutton Jr. when Toronto
was still the town of York.
The house was situated on a
hundred acres of land which
today is surrounded by the
city of Toronto landmarks.
This house is the oldest
surviving brick house in
Toronto. In 1973 it was
opened as a living museum
with the rooms restored to
the period of 1835-40.
The lovely, weather had

moved on to the second stop

Gibson, farmer
surveyor reflects the busy
rural life of a Upper Middle
class family of 1851.
On to Kleinberg, raining
much harder arriving at the
McMichael art Gallery. This
art gallery, first started
by Mr. & Mrs. McMichael in
their home, became so large
•with so many visitors they
gave their house to the
Canadian Government.
This McMichael Canadian
Collection displays some 900
works by Canada’s most
famous artists. Thirty
gallery rooms constructed
from hand-hewn timbers and
native stone in a natural
sanctuary on the crest of the
Humber River valley. Here
the visitors are offered an
opportunity to enjoy the
vivid art of the historic
Group of Seven and their
contemporaries.
A most enjoyable and full
day ended with all the ladies
enjoying a lovely dinner at
the Millcraft Inn at Otton
Ontario. From there it was
back to Exeter and home.

Stewardship is
meeting theme
Stewardship was the
theme for the meeting of the
Afternoon Unit UCW of
Exeter United Church. The
leader Mrs. Dearing read a
poem, “My Garden.”
Mrs. H. Murray in charge
of program asked that
members observe a minute’s
silence in memory of two
faithful members who had
recently passed away.
For the Worship service
Mrs. W. Thomson was
assisted by Mrs. W. Brock,
Mrs. R. Elgie, Mrs. V.
Jeffery and Mrs. R. Fink-
beiner.
It dealt with various ways
in which our United Church
responds to the command
given to Peter by Jesus —
“Feed My Sheep.”
Miss Ann Brodie played
two piano numbers —' “My
Task” and“In the Sweet Bye
and Bye.”
Mrs. Stewart Miner chose
for her topic “Our Steward
ship Garden.” Your garden
is beautiful only when you
work at it. In our Steward
ship Garden we should plant
our Money, Time and
Talents and keep them well
cultivated.
Make the best use of en
vironment, land and
resources and remember
much depends on our per
sonality. If properly cared
for, our lives will be rich and
we will find Thanksgiving*
will become Thanks living.
