At Friday’s meeting of county council, however, some indication was given to the planning board of the feelings of members. Goderich Township Deputy-reeve Grant Stirling said lie was surprised this request was put forward by Penfold at this time. Stirling said he understood the plan ning department was short- staffed and extremely busy. “Is the work going to be kept up when we’re short a planner?” asked Stirling. Planning c”..director Gary Davidson said the county has an educational policy for its employees, and that the planning board felt Pen fold’s request was valid enough to warrant con sideration. Davidson said the plan is to use a planning technician to keep things rolling along in the planning department “as best as possible”. McKillop Reeve Allan Campbell, chairman of the planning board, admitted that Penfold’s request “bothers” him. “Approval has not been granted yet,” said Warden Gerry Ginn. “A further recommendation will be coming in.” ★ * * The changeover to the metric system is causing the Huron County Planning Department some concern. The Ontario Ministry of Housing has reminded the planning department that as of July 1, 1978. all planning documents submitted to the Ministry must be in metric units. “This will cause a distinct problem for the planning department as the budget item for metric conversion in the proposed 1978 budget was deleted,” said planning board chairman Allan Campbell, McKillop reeve. * * * This is an election year for the municipalities and when nomination time rolls around, Goderich will be responsible for the nominations for the election of the separate school Thp Old Gymnasium South Huron H*gh School, Exeter Admission: Si 00 per person Woodham United Church CHICKEN BARBEQUE Adults $4.00 Children $2.00 Homemade Salads & Pies GARAGE SALE — In its continuing quest for funds, the Exeter and DistrictFOUNDATION GARAGE SALE — In its continuing quest for funds, the Exeter and District Heritage Foundation held a garage sale at the old town hall on Saturday. County council learned Friday this change is a result of the town of Goderich now having a higher separate school assessment than the Township of McKillop, the responsible municipality in 1976. WWW John Stafford, Deputy reeve of Howick who is also chairman of the Huron County Library Board, reported Friday that two films of the Huron District Assessment Rolls for the years 1842 to 1848 have been presented to the county library by the University of Western Ontario Library System. This gift was received as thanks for the library’s co operation in assisting with the micro-filming of The Clinton News-Record. Warden Gerry Ginn said the News-Record filming is the first step in an effort to update the recorded history of Huron County. It is to be continued to present day, county council agreed, and a student is to be hired to com plete the collation of the material under the guidance of Jerry Fremlin, a volunteer who has done this work in the past, The project is to be com pleted by September 30, 1978, and the cost is to be paid from the History Pro ject Budget. Members of the group who have been attending a con ference sponsored by the Learned Society of Canada at the University of Western Ontario, toured south western Ontario visiting local landmarks. In a slide presentation and talk held upstairs in the town hall, Dr. Anthony Adamson of the Ontario Heritage Foundation said “Huron County is fortunate in its town halls.” “In many parts of On tario, towns had grandiose visions of their future and built town halls out of proportion to their localities. They became white elephants. Huron county was prosperous and built in proportion.” Adamson, an author of several books on Canadian architecture, explained that in its early days, the hall, like many others, was also used as marketplace. “Butchers were common ly found in town halls,” he said. In the beginning there were very few permanent public officials and the natural activity in any public meeting place was selling.” Following the groups visit to Exeter, they travelled to Goderich, Clinton and Seaforth and toured the significant architectural buildings in each municipali ty. ’4 I JUNE 12 Breakfast served from 7 a.m. <ret»< Phone: 236-4923 for take-out STARLITE OPEN NIGHTLY First Show at Dusk * «...*-*••***‘.waj, +^|(rw< Children Under 12 in Cars Free GRAND BEND l The Filws Family: The/re Nat Roasted.
