The committee, formed only a few months ago by social service agency representatives in the area, is attempting to resolve common problems agencies encounter. Deane & Laughton Solicitors for the Executrix Exeter, Ontario Cal Krauter, the reeve of the village of Brussels, said Friday at county council that he had been doing some thinking about coun cil’s decision in April to ask that certain “dirty” books be removed from the re quired reading list in Huron County secondary schools. Since that meeting, Krauter said he’s read two of the three books in ques tion and decided that the ex cerpts provided by the Kingsbridge Catholic Women’s League upon which the county decision was made do not provide a fair assessment of the books and their value. The Kingsbridge ladies picked out the worst of them,” said Krauter. He said he’d had second I kA I I I I I thoughts about censorship, recalling that Hitler had burned books in Germany in 1939. “And we all know what happened after that,’’ said Krauter. He asked how many coun ty councillors had read the books in question - The Diviners, The Catcher in the Rye and Of Mice and Men. Only Bayfield Reeve Ed Oddleifson answered. Oddleifson admitted he hadn’t read the books. “But I’ve read the ex cerpts,” said Oddleifson. He said the writers of such books shouldn’t even be classed as authors, and add ed that resorting to such tac tics showed “a lack of good taste”. No further action was taken on the matter. 20:21:22c Gabion Stone Calcium Chloride in 100 pound bags Sand & Stone Gravel SWIMMING POOL SALE I I I I I I I I I I I [ill Exeter Office 235-2420 Decorate your home with beautiful Stone for Weeping Beds This Coupon Worth $100°° ACT NOW, LIMITED OFFER 16' x 32' completely installed .Regularly $419500 FOREST CITY POOLS (519)432-8876 Where Can You Get More?? i i R I I ■ ■■ i i i However Louise Mariatt, a spokeman for the Univer sity of Guelph’s rural out reach development project here, said most agencies already are aware of what services exist and the emphasis should be to let the public know. “It (a directory) doesn’t really have a great com munity use for Joe Public.” A directory would cost between 72 cents and $1.14 to produce. The special needs com mittee agreed to investigate what federal and provincial funding might be available for the project. The committee also en dorsed the idea of forming a Huron County children’s ser vices committee. It would be composed of 15 members representing municipal government, citizens and the Huron County Family and Children’s Services. Agency director John Penn said the committee wouldn’t begin operations for about a year.
