HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1978-05-25, Page 22Times-Advocate, May 25, 1978 Two popular actors sign for 'Odd Couple' shows James Murphy, Artistic Director for the Huron Country Playhouse an­ nounced this week that Television performer Jack Duffy, has been signed to star as Felix in the Playhouse production of The Odd Couple. Opposite Mr. Duffy will be Actra award winner, Les Carlson, in the role of Oscar. The two Canadian actors team up in Neil Simon’s comedy which opens July 4 for a two week engagement. Both actors are being brought in through the courtesy of a special grant from Conklin Lumber Ltd. Les Carlson won his Actra award for best supporting actor in the television Raku Fire as Steve, opposite Eileen Atkins. Last fall he was a regular on the CBC show Custard Pie. He is currently involved in the filming of a new movie Les Carlson rXD AKin RPKJH x7iv/MNU DlZINLz called Lost and Found starring George Segal and Glenda Jackson. Jack Duffy (“Mr. Television”) besides regular appearances on Party game for the past seven years has been seen as a Principal performer on the Billy O’Connor Show Showtime, The Barris Beat, in the Mood, Wayne & Shuster, Upside Town, Frankie Howard Show, Hudson Brothers, George Kirby Show, Razzle Dazzle, Bobby Vinton Show, Perry Como Kraft Music Hall and his own series Here’s Duffy. During the business convened by president,Nola Taylor, the members decided to entertain patients at Huronview in August for their birthday party. Another branch Institute wants the Grand Bend branch to cater to a dinner to them for a group of 90 who are coming to attend a play at Huron Country Playhouse. Christmas in July hand made articles were handed in to go to North West Territories. The ladies are planning two summer bake sales. Time date set later. A sum of $50 was collected for travelling expenses for FatherMennenwho is here to visit his brother who is ill, Pete Mennon of the Klon- dyke area. One of the ladies projects last weekend was a housecleaning bee at the church. Roberta Walker gave a report on the Diocesan Convention held May 9 and 10 in Brescia College, London, which she and Ann Grootjen attended. The theme of the con­ vention was “The family is the church of the home.” A speaker spoke on problems of the aged in today’s society and communicating in marriage. A suggestion for a possible project was to raise funds for a summer camp at Moosonee for Indian children. The travelling prize donated by Helen Tate was won by Ann Baltessen. The June meeting will be in the form of a pot luck supper and the last meeting till fall. Flowers in the United Church sanctuary Sunday morning were placed in loving memory of George Scott, Grand Cove Estates, by his family. Following the choir and congregations singing of “Amazing Grace”, Rev. H. Moore’s sermon topic was “Can you see?” based on the author’s life of this song. The hymn sing Sunday morning numbers chosen at random from the congregation has proved quite popular. The Confirmation class will meet Saturday morning at 10.30 a.m. at the church. The Young people met Tuesday night at the United Church. In the absence of Rev. Moore, Marie McKinnon presided for their meeting. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Riddoch and Lisa, Sarnia, visited on the weekend with her father, Erwin Holt. Mrs. Lawrence Johnson accompanied her husband on the Fettes tour bus trip to the Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan, last week. Dr. & Mrs. C. B. Sanders, Welland, Dr. & Mrs. Gavin Stewart, London, David Sanders and Pam Alway, London, spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Art Fink- beiner. Fred Gratton is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. Mr. & Mrs. Jack Smith, Wiarton, spent the weekend in Green Acres with her father, Ezra Webb. Mrs. Margaret Maven, Guelph spent a few days with Buelah Holt and Mrs. Mae Holt. Mrs. Maven and Buelah attended the Shakespeare Festival, Saturday at Stratford and saw “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, and “A Winter’s Tale.” Mrs. Ettie Baker celebrated her 89th birthday Sunday when all four of her daughters were home for the occasion to have dinner with her. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. George Latta on their 40th wedding anniversary last week. Mr. & Mrs. Dave Junker attended the confirmation service for their grandson Michael Junker at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hamburg, Sunday, and then a family gathering at their son’s Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Junker. A surprise 45th wedding anniversary was arranged for Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Graham, Saturday p.m, with dinner at Fireside Inn, Thedford, and remainder of evening playing euchre at Mr. & Mrs. Doug Paddell’s. Friends, neighbours and relatives attended. Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Curts attended the operetta “The Proud Prince”, Thursday evening, at Cath­ cart school Sarnia in which their grandchildren there had singing parts.
