Dear Sir,
I have just returned from
the 54th Annual Meeting of
London Conference of the
United Church of Canada
which was held in Windsor,
May 16, 17, 18.
Prior to the conference a
small group from one of the
Presbyteries attempted to
have the London Conference
suggest to its clergy and lay
membership that they
boycott the meetings of
Evangelist Anita Bryant.
As is so often the case this
small incident was reported
as the major concern of the
Conference.
As a matter of fact the
subject didn’t even come
before the court.
It would appear that most
members of the United
Church are aware of the
scriptural stand regarding
the whole issue of
homosexuality Romans,
Chap. 1. 24-27 (The Living
Bible).
Because of the furor raised
by this issue in the media,
individual members of the
United Church and those of
other denominations were
shocked.
People began to malign the
United Church and to
assume few spoke for all.
Only motions officially
approved (moved, seconded,
and passed) by London
Conference represent the
mind of London Conference.
London Conference is only
a portion of the total United
Church General Council.
General Council is the body
responsible for speaking
United Church doctrine or
policy. Because of the
prominence of coverage of
this matter the day by day
serving of God by the United
Church became a non-
reportable matter.
However, I for one one am
always aware of the beauty
of our church.
It is a collection of sinners
become saints by their ac
ceptance of the Lordship of
Jesus Christ.
We are human and as such
are beset by all kinds of
problems and sin, but in
Christ we are not subject to,
or ruled by them. I John 4:4
(R.S.V.).
Let us remember the job
that is being done.
This Conference was one of
the most exciting efficient,
spiritual and filled with the
presence of The Father, The
Son and The Holy Ghost, that
I have ever had the
priviledge of attending.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jacqueline Pierce
