By TOM LESSARD This is the time of the year when the kids hit the streets and fields in and around our communities to reap the warmth of the sun after spending a long winter in the confines of our offtimes boring houses. At the same time a few of the more in terested adults take a couple hours of their leisure time to go out with the kids and organize entertainment for them. The Stephen Optimist Club has already begun with the registration for soccer and baseball. So far there have been 40 youngsters listed for soccer and enough for a couple of teams of T- ball. Also at this time of the year all across Canada and the U.S.A. The Optimist Clubs sponsor a bike safety week. Our club has started with a written test which is being conducted at the schools in the township, Following the completion of these tests the children will have a rodeo at the J.A.D. McCurdy School in Huron Park. The date for this rodeo is May 27 at 9 a.m. Any boy or girl wishing to participate is asked to attend with their bike. The O.P.P. will be assisting us to run this event. On April 29 the club held it’s charter banquet at the Huron Park Rec. Centre. In attendance was the Governor for the District (Ontario) Dr. Bob Wahby and many representatives of the Optimists Clubs of Ontario. Members were presented with their charter member certificates and name badges. The club was presented with the Optimist banner, bell and gavel and a Canadian flag. A dance was held following the for malities. This event was one of the biggest in our lives and especially in the life of our president Bill McGrath. Congratulations fellows. This past weekend president Bill McGrath, his wife, Jim Gage and his wife and Tom Lessard travelled to the Ontario District third officers of the detachment of the Provincial Police. The first of this mishaps occurred Tuesday on Highway 23 about one kilometer south of Con cession road 6-7 in Blanshard township. The vehicles involved were driven by Bruno Pedrech, Komoka and Margaret Taziar, RR 1 Granton. Minor injuries were sustained by both drivers and a passenger Christine Taziar. Constable Jim Rogers set damages at $4,500. Four vehicles were in volved in Saturday’s first accident which took place in the late morning on Highway 4 near the Kirkton road. Drivers of the vehicles were Patricia Jones, Cen tralia; Gregory Fleming, RR 2, Crediton; Maria Fevery, RR 2, Lucan and Alphons Moyer. Suffering minor injuries were Fleming, Fevery and a passenger Ella Moyer. Damages were listed at $1,700 by Constable Jim Rogers. The second accident on Saturday took place in Huron Park when a vehicle driven by Paul Theander struck a tree on Columbia drive. Constable Rogers estimated damages at $1000. a two vehicle accident on Sunday caused damage estimated at $1550. Drivers of the two vehicles, Glenn Grover of Strathroy and Russell Macrae of Arva collided on Highway 84, 18.2 meters east of St. Joseph.
