At the first council agree on lot rental meeting of the month councillor Bill Baird said Thompson-Warner had been using more of the lot, located on the north side of Highway 81 than had been specified in the lease agreement and that the firm should lease all the land at double the previous ----------------------------------------------------.---------- Reminder Your volunteer fire department serving Grand Bend and part of Stephen and Bosanquet Townships will be at your door on Saturday, May 27 to pick up your newspapers. In a letter written to council and read by clerk treasurer Louise Clipperton, Warner said, “It bothers me to that we used the parking lot in question for one year and have to read in the paper that we quote, “didn’t obey your wishes.” If we were not living up to our agreement why was this never brought to our attention. . . Our opinion is that we did in fact stay on our part of the lot except only very recently when we were asked on behalf of the village by the firm drilling test holes for the upcoming sewers to move our boats to the other end of the lot so they could drill test holes. Immediately on their completion the boats were moved back to our end of the lot.” Warner who was present at the council meeting, was told by Reeve Bob Sharen the matter came before council because the lease had elapsed, Warner also asked for specific dates when his boats had been outside the area which he had leased. Sharen said he could not name specific dates but that other council members had noticed on several occasions boats outside of the rental area, There was considerable disagreement over the area actually rented with Warner producing a diagram that he said showed the area rented. Sharen and other council members said they had not seen the diagram with Baird saying the size of the lot rented was between one hal’f and three quarters of the lot’s size. Warner agreed that there was a difference of opinion as to what he was actually renting and said “If we’re wrong, we’re wrong.” Council decided they would investigate the site and specify the amount of public parking the village wanted. The remainder of the lot would then be rented1 to Thompson-Warner. Warner agreed with the proposal. The question of whether construction that’s being conducted by the Hay Municipal Telephone Company will be completed by the May 24th weekend was the first question council put to Bill Ewing of M.N. Dillon, consulting engineers for the con struction. “What in blue blazes are these guys doing? ” said Sharen. Ewing stated the paving would be completed early Friday to just miss the holiday onslaught. When Sharen asked for some reassurances that this would be the case, Ewing replied, “It’s as guaranteed as anything can be guaranteed.” Gabian Stone Calcium Chloride in 100 pound bags Sand & Stone Gravel Stone for Weeping Beds EARL LIPPERT TRUCKING LTD. Bill Ewing of M. N. Dillon, the consulting engineers for the project, said the drawings will be presented to the ministry of en vironment sometime in June. In a related matter council learned extensions of the sewer system to River road and Centre street may not require an Ontario Municipal Board hearing providing that 100 percent of abutting landowners gave their approval. Reeve Sharen in an in terview following the meeting, said the 0MB gave approval to \ the sewer system two years ago and if an 0MB hearing for the extensions was called, this would not delay the project. Ignoring objections from the reeve, council approved the granting of a building permit to Bill McNichol and Wayne Moody of M and N Fisheries for the con struction of a new building "My favorite hobby'' The next regular meeting of the Womens Institute will be held at the United Church, Thursday evening May 18 at 7:30 p.m. Roll call will b6 “My favorite hobby and show a sample,” display of hand work, and members asked to bring plants slips for an exchange. President, Mark Willert, presided. Janet Allister led devotions with Bible scripture and prayer. The senior choir leader was present and led the young folks in practising a new song, “Hey Hey is an- body listening?” Janet Allister and Shellie Meecham gave five minute talks on their topic of pet peeves. Following this the group discussed the topic. Sharen said the bylaw allows for the replacement of an existing building that has non-conforming land uses rights with a building of the same size and which will be engaged in the same business. The building as proposed by M and N would be two and one half feet larger. Council disagreed with Sharen’s interpretation of the bylaw and approved the building permit. A proposal by a Ken Bailey for the erection of an “Aqua Shoot” slide was received with interest by council but was given the cold shoulder with council detailing several reasons why the slide would not be suitable for the resort village. The proposed slide mounted on the water’s edge would be 22 feet high, 40 feet long and would have three ramps with rollers propelling the rider into the water, Bailey said he heard the resort town was quite popular and he felt the slide could be a success. It was the intent of the village to keep the beach area non-commercial Sharen said, which ruled out the erection of such a structure. “The concept sounds good but Grand Bend doesn’t have a wide enough beach,” Sharen stated. Councillors Harold Green and Bill Baird said the idea might be better suited for calm water areas such as the Parkhill conservation area. In an about face, council rescinded a decision made at the last council meeting that would have seen main street from the Village Inn Retreat corner to the beach closed from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Saturday June 17 during the fourth annual Buffalo Burger Fest. Council had made the decision as they had believed all businesses affected by the closure had given their approval. A letter from Sander’s Tavern was received by council strongly objecting to the closing and which stated their business would be affected by the Closing.
