A Central feature of the drive will be a special Blitz campaign to be held in ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDERSON'S TAXI A new service for Grand Bend and area. 20 Woodward St 238-8175 r downtown Grand Bend on the May 24 weekend. A kiosk will be set up in Grand Bend where people can pick up a “Subscription Ticket” and a special bonus. Those picking up a season’s ticket during the long weekend will also get a free pass to the Playhouse opening production, The Odd Couple. The Subscription Drive goal for the year is 1500 and that mark is nearly half way already. The greeat ad­ vantage of being a sub­ scriber, savings, is getting first choice on seats before they go on sale to the general public on June 1st. Barbara Murphy, Director of Operations at the Playhouse, already reports a strong response to two of the seasons highlights, The Odd Couple and Oklahoma! It is predicted that Oklahoma! the rousing Rodgers and Hammerstien, may sell out before the show opens. Reserve seat tickets go on sale on Monday May 22. Seventeen ladies met in the Sunday School rooms of the United Church for their U.C.W. May meeting. Guest speaker was Mrs. Morley Desjardine and her topic was “Hat’s off to Mother,” which she illustrated with different hats of what a mother does as nurse, housekeeper, chauffeur, gardener, ball player, construction worker, judge, psychiatrist, farmer andeducator. She said many things come in pairs, but only one mother, and that an ounce of mother is worth a ton of cure. President, Eleanor Durie, presided for the business. Roll call was answered by a verse referring to spring. The worship service, prepared by Elaine Moore, was conducted by Hazel Blewett, on Mother’s and home. She spoke of Jesus' home at Nazareth, of a famous man saying his happiest moments were spent at home, and the importance of * Grandmas and Grandpas in a child’s life. Scripture from 1st Corinthians Chapter 13 was read by Annie Morenz. Mrs. Blewett read a poem, “Blessed is the family,” and a “Song of the Lazy Far­ mer.” An invitation to Centralia U.C.W. was read to attend their meeting May 18, to hear Mrs, Verna Austin, missionary in Taiwan (presently on leave in Canada) at 8:00 p.m. Lunch hostesses were Olga Chipchase, Elda Adams and Annie Morenz. United Church bulletin The week beginning May 15 is designated as National Week for the Mentally Retarded. During this week, representatives for the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded will calling on members of this community. We commend the work of this association to you. The Nursery School mothers are holding a bake sale and white elephant sale, Saturday May 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. If Weather permits, sale will be held on Church lawn. J Grand Cove man dies George Robert Scott George Robert Scott of 291 Concord Grand Cove Estates, Grand Bend for­ merly of Wingham, passed away suddenly May 14 at St. Joseph Hospital, London in his 75th year. Survived by his wife, Evelyn McKay, one son Richard of London, two grandchildren, Greg and Jennifer. Predeceased by one son David (1966) Also survived by two sisters Mrs. Ella Fairservice, Blyth, (Agnes) Mrs. Cecil Forster, Palmerston, four brothers, James Scott, Blyth, William Scott, California, Andrew Scott, Wingham, Stewart Scott, Woodstock. The funeral was held Wednesday May 17 with Dr. Robert Armstrong of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Wingham, of­ ficiating. Burial at Wingham cemetery. Mr. Scott had resided at Grand Cove this past two years. He was a retired agent for Prudential Insurance Company and an elder in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Wingham for over 40 years. Lioness club treats seniors The Lioness Club who sponsor meals on wheels, treated the Senior Citizens who were able to go out, to dinner at the Village Inn, taking them there and bringing them home again, last Wednesday. Fun, games and prizes were awarded and each person received a corsage and a fruit basket. A number of Institute members gathered at Nola Taylor’s home, Thursday night to plan the W.I. programs for the coming year. Sod Busters study plows The South Huron 4-H Sod Busters club met Monday evening at Valentine Becker’s implement shop in Dashwood. Mr. Becker discussed setting and parts of the plough. Officers elected were: president-Danny Gill, vice- president-Bevan Shapton, secretary-John Love, press reporter-Steven Walper, youth counsellor-Lyle Kinsman. The next meeting will be June 5 at Bruce Shapton’s. He showed films, slides and commentary of Australia and souvenirs. He delighted the children present by writing their names in Korean. Church of God ladies held a mother and daughter “Carry Inn” supper at the Church Friday evening with around 70 in attendance. Members of the men’s club as guests volunteered to wash dishes and clean up, while the ladies had their program. Guest speaker was Esther Snyder, talking on two years mission work in Grenada.
