Sunday service In the United Church Sunday morning Terry Somerville spoke to a large congregation on the subject “The Tongue” and based his thoughts on the third chapter of the book of James. During the service Rev. E. Donald Stuart administered the rite of baptism to Mark Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Deschamps. A ladies choir provided special music for the service with organ and piano ac­ companiment by Mr. Douglas Gill and Mrs. Ray Mills. Nancy and Mary Lou Tindall played a clarinet duet that was greatly en­ joyed by their listeners. The offertory music was an organ and piano duet by Mr. Gill and Mrs. Mills. Personals Senior Citizens enjoyed an afternoon of crokinole and cards followed by lunch in the Community Centre, Monday. SUMMERS GRANTON The Granton Cubs took their “Moms” bowling Monday evening, at the “Wheels” alleys in London. All but two mothers took part, and a good time of recreation was enjoyed by cubs, leaders and moms. Friendly neighbors meet The Friendly Neighbors met Wednesday afternoon at the Scout Hall where a number of members enjoyed games of shuffleboard, euchre, crokinole and pool, and later a social time over refreshments. Church news At the United Church, Rev. Elwood Morden conducted the Mother’s Day and Christian Family Sunday service, and officiated at the Sacrament of Baptism. Rev. Morden took as the theme for his Meditation “Keep the Home Fires Burning” and made an appeal to married couples to work harder at making their marriage a success. In these times there seems to be so many marriage breakups, said the minister. The home is the place where children find character, security, and love, and they need a daddy and mummy for this. Families thrive when they know that love has to be built within the home. The best way to improve society is to improve family life, always keep the “Home Fires Burning” arid security, religion and love for your children. Twelve babies were baptized including two sets of twins, and their families and relatives filled the church. Infants receiving the Sacrament were Jean Marie, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jeffrey Bryan. Mary Mills conducted the morning service at St. Thomas Anglican Church Sunday and took her sermon from the 8th chapter of Romans. This being the day of Pentecost and commonly called Whit Sunday, which is a yearly remembrance of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples in Jerusalem. Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins lay delegate to the Senate of St, Thomas Anglican Church attended the Senate of the Diocese of Huron May 7 and 8 held at St. Paul’s Cathedral and Althouse College. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Stewart and Jesse of Moncton N.B. are spending a two weeks vacation with Mr. & Mrs. Frank Beaucage and family. Other members of the family attending a reunion a week ago on Sunday were Mr. &Mrs. John Stewart and John Henry; Mr. & Mrs. Glen Vicary and Jennifer, all of Huron Park, and Mr. & Mrs. Dan Foreman and family, Zurich. Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs were Mother’s Day dinner guests at the home of their daughter Mrs. Wm Egan, and her husband and son Dan on Sunday evening. Stephen Central TIGER TIMES Friday, the music teachers at Stephen School gave out treats to all the choir members who participated in the Music Night, Wed­ nesday. Everyone got a doughnut and chocolate milk. We had to sing to eat. Sarah McClure. Thursday and Friday May 18 and 19 we will be having a Candid Camera Day. The pictures will be taken in black and white. The first prize is $3., and second is $2., and third is $1. and there are four honourable mention prizes. The pictures will be handed in on June 2. The visitors report was given by Mrs. Harold Jones for Mrs. Tom Reid and also by Mrs. John Cooper Mrs. Harold Jones read the duties of the Stewardship and Finance Secretary and also gave the treasurers’ report. The ladies will pack a bale by the end of May and will have a Bake Sale at Homestead on July 1 weekend and also on Civic holiday weekend if possible. An invitation to Brucefield U.C.W. for June 6 was read. It was decided to send a donation of $20 to Clinton Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Kyle, the president, opened the meeting with a Mothers’ Day Poem and closed it with prayer. Bill Colemans silo and transformer were struck with lightening during the severe storm on May 9. Fuses were blown and damage done to other homes in the vicinity Bert Faber, who has been seriously ill, in St. Josephs Hospital London, is recovering nicely. Rochus Faber, who has spent some time in Florida, has returned to his home. Mrs. Ruth Dickert, Harriston, is spending a few days with her sister Mrs, Norman Dickert. Mr. and Mrs. Gayle Cooper and family, London are spending Saturday with Mr. and Mrs.Vivan Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. Art Gibson and family, Wroxeter spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. W.L.
