mean town police will be
calling the shots on how it
operates, Chief Pat King
said Tuesday.
King said he and police
chiefs from Clinton,
Seaforth, Wingham, and
Exeter met Monday to
discuss the best method of
operating the system which
will link their forces under a
central dispatch.
“The only thing is, I have
been designated the host •
chief for the system, and I
will work under guidelines
worked out by the chiefs as a
whole. My main function will
be to see that the com
munication system runs the
way the other four chiefs
want it to run.”
King said the five
municipal councils will
likely be represented on a
“guiding committee” whicfi
would oversee the operation.
The new system will not do
away with local police
commissions. Individual
police departments will
operate much as they do now
with only emergency calls
going into the central
dispatch, King said.
“The most difficult thing I
see is for the five chiefs to
educate the public in each
town to use the emergency
number.
“ They (the public) will
still be able to call their local
police for every-day mat
ters. It’s the emergency
matters they call ^here,"
King said.
It Will take eight or nine
months to get the new
system operating. There was
some concern that tenders
be called soon enough to
have the system in before the
end of the year when
provincial funding could be
reconsidered.
The province is paying 75
percent of the $70,000 start
up cost with the five
municipalities sharing the
remaining 25 per cent and
operating costs.
Tenders were delayed by a
disagreement between
Goderich and Clinton on
where the new system should

go. However, Clinton council
agreed Monday to support
the decision of the other
municipalities to locate it in
Goderich.
While insisting there would
be no hard feelings, Mayor
Harold Lobb told his council;
“I don’t know where we have
failed, but somewhere along
the way we failed to get the
co-operation of the other
municipalities.”
Clinton felt the system
should be there because it is
the centre of the county.
Figures council obtained
showed it would have cost
the five towns $146 less for
monthly telephone line
rentals if the system were in
Clinton.
“It looks like a small
amount spread among the
five municipalities, but it is a
saving to all of them,” Lobb
said.
Unlike Goderich, Clinton
does not have 24-Hour police
patrol, a stipulation of the
Ontario Police Commission
for receiving grants for the
system.

Canada’s foremost
mentalist is coming to South
Huron District High School
Wednesday, May 17. In the
last few months everyone
has probably heard of “The
Incredible Mike Mandel."
Mike’s specialty is “the
realm of the mind and the
power of suggestion as a
force.” Translated that
means he does strange
things to people on stage and
totally enthralls his audience
in the process.
Mike’s guests on stage will
be anyone who wishes to be
involved from the audience.
He has appeared more than
once on the CFPL “Open
Line” show projecting
people’s future merely by
telephone.
Only a few people in this
area have seen Mike Mandel
all of who were totally
astounded by the show.
WELCOME TO THE 23R& CENTURY.
