Back at the Church a short meditation period was led by Jean Weigand on a “Spring” theme. Larry Taylor closed with a prayer. Following a business session lunch was served. SUMMERS The weatherman really was kind Sunday afternoon for the “Ride for Cancer” sponsored by the Lucan- Biddulph Cancer Society. There was a good turnout for the ride from Granton to Lucan and back for Granton riders, and Lucan to Granton and back for Lucan riders with refreshments at the halfway check outs. The Lucan-Biddulph executive of the Cancer Society would like to extend their appreciation to the riders, sponsors, Lucan and Granton senior citizens clubs and all who helped in anyway to make this event a success. Court Valentine Court Valentine met at the Mason’s Hall Tuesday evening. Sister Melba St. Dennis presided and opened Court. Items of business were looked after. A goodly sum was voted to the Cancer Society. The craft diplay and sale was discussed with a ten­ tative date set for October. Sister Marie Doyle’s resignation as president was received with regret by the members. A nominating committee consisting of Sisters Sandra Hern and Olive Hodgins (Mrs. Kenneth) was named to prepare a slate of officers for the June meeting. Sister Dorothy Hern was the lucky winner of a'' Forester coffee spoon for the attendance draw and Sister Eileen Summers won the numbers draw. At the United Church Rev. St. Thomas A.C.W. meet The May meeting of the St. Thomas A.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. Laverne Morley with Mrs. James Hodgins presiding and opening the meeting with prayer. The roll call was answered by naming “A Christian Book I have read this year”. Mrs. C. Lewis gave a report on the A.C.W. conference held in London last week and Mrs. J. Noon reported on the Deanery meeting she at­ tended at St. James Anglican Church, St. Marys. The business was dealt with, followed by the scrip­ ture lesson read by Mrs. Noon. Mrs. L. Morley was in charge of the program and read the Meditation and two poems from the Living Message. U.C.W. Units meet Mrs. Elwood Morden was the hostess for Unit I of the UCW at the Manse Wed­ nesday afternoon, May 3. Mrs. Gordon McRobert presided and opened with scripture readings. The Lesson Thoughts were on self pity. Mrs. Glen Jameson and Mrs. Clifford McRobert were the program conveners with Mrs. Jameson presenting a paper dealing with temp­ tation and entitled “We human beings”. This revealed that there is nothing wicked in being tempted, but it is the way we handle temptation that tells whether our character is strong or not. A good discussion followed. Mrs. McRobert gave two readings pertaining to Mother’s Day, entitled “Until we know” and “Mother”. Mrs. Earle Middleton and Mrs. Wm. Goos assisted the hostess to serve lunch. Unit 3 met at the home of Mrs. Robt Garrett Tuesday evening with Mrs. Leroy Bryan presiding and con­ ducting the business. Mrs. Chas. Hayden and Mrs. L. Bryan were in charge of the devotional. Mrs. Leroy Bryan con­ vened a program on the Caribbean by using a film strip and a tape recording followed by a discussion on the original colonies as to religion, language and in­ dustry for further discussion two separate groups were formed. Mrs. James Kerr was the hostess for Unit 4 Wednesday evening. Mrs. Nelson Tate presided with the Meditation on self pity. Mrs. Norman Riddell 'convened the program, presenting a paper on the theme “We human beings’’. This dealt with temptation, even dating back to the Garden of Eden. Mrs. Riddell also gave two readings, the first one was a poem from the Jr. Farmer’s Magazine and written by Diane O’Shea (Mrs. Michael), entitled “Stop and smell the roses” and the second “Hyacinths feed the Soul”. Unit 5 met at the home of Mrs. Emerson Wallis Wednesday evening with Mrs. Chas. McRobert presiding. She opened the meeting with a poem entitled “None like a Mother”. Mrs. Clare Bryan was in charge of the program and opened with a poem “My Personal Creed”. The Bible study was presented from a paper on the theme “We human beings” This dealt with temptation and con­ tained the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Scout and Cub news The scouts, cubs and their leaders are very busy rehearsing for their variety show which will be held in the Scout Hall, Friday May 26, and Sunday May 28. At a banquet Wednesday evening held in the Tavistock Legion Hall for Scout and Cub leaders, Charles Lemmon, Granton was named chairman of Perth District Scouts Canada. Cub leader Mrs. Gordon McRobert, Mrs. Lemmon and Mr. & Mrs. George Westman attended from Granton. Personals Mrs. Emerson Wallis and Miss Edna Wallis attended a quilter’s workshop at Trinity Lutheran Church, London, Wednesday. Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Joseph Jr. Skonieczny, who passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, on Wed­ nesday, May 3 in his 28th year. Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Jermyn, Inwood were Sunday visitors of Mr. & Mrs. Austin Hobbs.
