By GORD WHITEHEAD A resolution disagreeing with the federal govern ment’s belief that a 9.8 percent increase in spending is “restraint” and calling on Ottawa to reassess its need to boost spending to $48.8 billion was approved by Middlesex County Board of Education last week. In moving Middlesex support for the protest, which originated with the Halton Board of Education, trustee Tim Blackburn said he would “like to speak to this matter but I would need at least an hour.” There was no other comment and the motion passed unanimously. In February, the board approved its own 1978-79 spending estimates of $24.9 million, an increase .of $1.2 million or 5.3 percent. Middlesex trustees ap proved a new fee schedule for students whose homes are outside the county but who wish to attend-school in the Middlesex system. Annual tuition fees for the 1978-79 school year will be $305 for elementary pupils, $515 for secondary students and $1,030 for trainable retarded students whose fees are paid directly by parents or guardians permanently living in Ontario. The approved fees are about 60 percent of the maximum allowable under provincial regulation and a, printed report noted that higher charges might force parents or guardians of the current 20 fee-paying students to insist they return to their own jurisdictions where their education would be paid through taxes. Two school psychologists reported to the board that each has a caseload of about 120 students facing emotional or behaviour problems, with waiting lists averaging about 20 more young people. Medway High School, North Middlesex Secondary School, Biddulph-Lucan, McGillivray and East Williams schools are served by Dr. Frank Colman, (cct.) The recent rolback in OHIP premiums has given some relief to the Middlesex board’s budget. Business administrator W. N. Ashby told the Times-Advocate that the extra cost to the board for all of its employees will be $21,000 in 1978, instead of $42,000 under the original increase. | ADAMS | I Heating & Cooling 1 Heating Systems of All Types INSTALLED, MODERNIZED and MAINTAINED • General Sheet Metal Work • Air Condition! • Humidifiers • Ventilation 235-2187 Bolensi 1 ■Lawn and garden work is easier with our depen dable products . . . and you know you can count on us for expert service if you should ever need it. and • RIDING EXCELLENT SELECTION OF LAWNMOWERS ROTO TILLERS = 133 Huron St., East, Exeter = niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiirF SPORTS & RECREATION LIMITED 262-5809 VARNA, ONT.
