Tuckey sugar bush is a family operation The weather m an’s promise of warmer weather continuing this week should increase the production of maple syrup. Wayne and Oscar Tuckey are busy processing the sweet liquid in their Hay township bush, a mile and a quarter north of Exeter The season started slowly as cold weather persisted but the sap was running "much better" Tuesday and Wednesday according to Mrs. Wavne Tuckey. She told the T-A Wednes day afternoon. ‘‘We got a white frost last night which we didn’t expect and this certainly will help increase the flow of sap." The Tuckey maple syrup production was 120 gallons in 1977 and they expect to at least reach this figure this year. Only about 50 gallons were realized in 1976 The Turkey’s have 450 trees tapped. It took about three days for three men to do the tapping by hand. Oscar Tuckey said he has been tapping maple trees since 1920. He added. “I have only missed one year since 1920. It’s a good way to get into good physical condi tion for the coming summer farming season." Most of the work is carried out by Oscar Tuckey. his son Wayne and grandson Peter. Some extra volunteer help came last year when his son-in-law Jim Tuckey of Michigan dropped in with children Philip and Kathv. The maple syrup day for the Tuckey’s starts at 5 a.m. and carries on continuously for at least 12 hours. Oscar Tuckey says the quality of syrup has im proved considerably since evaporators replaced boiling pans. the Usborne starts fire fund Usborne council voted in favor of establishing a reserve fund for a new fire truck at their April meeting. The Exeter area fire board has recommended to the four supporting municipalities that a reserve of $4,000 per year be established for the future purchase of a new truck. Hay Township council has decided not to approve the reserve fund, and there have been no indications yet if that will stall the plan or whether the other municipalities will still proceed. Usborne councillors have also endorsed a resolution from Turnberry, supporting the Huron board of education’s stand in the current teacher dispute. They also approved a recommendation from Huron County council that the county take over the ad ministration of senior citizens’ housing, This would enable seniors to secure ac commodation in any unit in the county where a vacancy exists, regardless in which municipality they live.
