After losing the home opener, the Hawks posted a 4-2 win on Friday and then dropped a 7-5 verdict in St. George on Sunday to send them into Tuesday’s game needing a win or facing the prospect of being down by two games. With the win, the Hawks and St. George now face a best-of-three situation in which the Hawks have the home advantage, although both teams have won on their opponent’s ice. Fifth game in the series will be at the rec centre on Friday and the teams go back to St. George on Sunday afternoon, if the seventh game is needed, it will be in Exeter on Tuesday night. Although the score was close in Tuesday’s game, the Hawks carried a wide edge in play and just missed the corners on several of the scoring opportunities they had. The Lions, who switched to some rough-house tactics on Sunday, attempted the same style of aggressive play and it actually led to their downfall as the Hawks scored two power play goals. St. George served 14 penalties, compared to the eight picked up by Exeter. Matt Misner, who drew four penalties, a misconduct and an automatic two minutes, was assessed a match penalty at the end of the game for being too aggressive with the officials and will be out of the lineup. Coach John Philichuck, who was also upset with the officiating, had to be restrained by other team officials when he attempted to get into the referee’s room after the game. The Hawks were without the services of defenceman Phil Knight for Tuesday’s game, but the defensive corps made up for his ab sence with their best game of the series. Randy Fisher and Steve Jennison saw extra duty and were both out standing, giving Scott McNair plenty of defensive help, plus leading several key rushes. The Lions started out quickly in Tuesday’s contest and beat McNair at the 4:11 mark, but that was the only time they were to lead the game. Exeter’s power play got untracked in the opening minute of the second stanza when Fisher took a pass at the point from Fred Mom- mersteegand the rebound off the shot was batted into the cage by Ken Pinder. Midway through NOT MANY WHITES — Defenceman Jim FergusonNOT MANY WHITES — Defenceman Jim Ferguson was left alone to battle for this loose puck in Friday night's game at the rec centre. Fortunately, he prevented the St. George player from getting the disc in front to two team mates who were left ur^overed in scoring position. John Livermore back again period, the Pinder- Mommersteeg -Va n G er w en line came up with another strong power play attempt and the puck was given to Steve Jennison at the point. He fed the disc across to Fisher and the latter blasted a slap shot into the net for Exeter’s first lead. St. George came back to even the count at 2-2 at the 14:38 mark, but Exeter quickly got that one back when Randy Parsons finished off a play with Dave Bogart and Fisher. Matt Muller scored the clincher after five minutes of the third when his rebound hit a St. George player and trickled over the line. From that point on, the Hawks kept St. George at bay, with McNair being forced into only one or two big saves. He made a brilliant stick save near the midway mark of the final period to keep the Hawks lead intact. All three lines skated hard throughout the tilt and their determination paid off as they kept the Lions off- balance. St. George couldn’t shake the forechecking in the final period and it was Exeter applying the scoring pressure in the final minutes. Fall behind early In their first trip to the St. George arena, Sunday, the Hawks fell behind quickly on their way to a 7-5 loss before 750 fans, about half of them from Exeter. The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the series by virtue of the win in a contest that saw referee Frank Slota call a total of 48 penalties, 26 to St. George. Both teams played a sizeable portion of the se cond period with only three skaters on the ice. The Hawks trailed 5-2 at one point in the game, and while they tied the fray at 5- 5 late in the second, goalie Ken Kirby shut them out for the balance of the contest as his mates rapped in two on Scott McNair. Steve Beer started in the nets for the Hawks, but was relieved at the end of the first after suffering some shaky moments. St. George took a quick lead when Mat Misner blink ed the light after 34 seconds when his slap shot from just over centre ice eluded Beer. Randy Fisher got that one back when he skated from his own end and drilled a hard shot from just outside the blueline to beat Kirby. The Exeter defence got caught up shortly after and St. George broke out with a three-on-one to up their lead to 2-1, but again the Hawks tied the count when Phil Knight rambled up the right side on a delayed penalty call and went right through to blink the light. St. George then rapped in three more to take their 5-2 margin, the first coming on a screened shot from the point on a power play, the second while the teams were playing even and the third tally when Misner broke in alone on Beer when St. George were playing a man short. Fred Mommersteeg got one of those back before the end of the first period on a play with Ken Pinder and Steve Jennison and the Hawks evened the count late in the second. Brian Taylor scored the fourth goal when he was left along in front of the net on a power play with Pinder and Jennison, while John VanGerwen knotted the count on another power play with Mommersteeg and Pinder. However, even before the Exeter fans had regained their seats after cheering the come-back effort, the Lions moved back into the lead in the second with a tal ly at the 16:35 mark after McNair had made two point blank saves. The Lions scored the only tally of the third, mid-way through the stanza, to pull the game out of reach of the Hawks. Overcome deficit Due to last week’s cancell ed game in St. George, the Hawksfaced a “must” situa tion when they skated onto the ice for their second home game on Friday. A loss would have put their backs to the wall early in the the final session enroute io a 4-2 win. St. George scored both power the first period, but by the end of the second they had the game knotted and they scored the only two tallies of first period goals on series. They gave 991 fans a bit of a fright as they dropped behind by a 2-0 margin after LOTS OF HELP — St. George netminder Ken Kirby had plenty of help in thwarting this scoring attempt by Ken Pinder and John Van Gerwen. All five St. George players were back to help out. T-A photo Colonials defeated in five, Parkhill take S.H. title The Parkhill Merchants took the South Huron Hockey League title Sunday af ternoon as they defeated the Grand Bend Colonials 9-6 to take the best of seven final four games to one. The game which saw 21 penalties called was a close contest until Parkhill scored five consecutive goals during the middle portion of the game. Following the first Parkhill score of the evening, the Colonials came back with goals by Tom Anderson and Brad Datars. Assisting on the scores were Pete Gill, Larry Laye and John Becker. The Merchants regained their one goal lead with two more goals but a Grand Bend score byAnderson knotted the game at three goals apiece. Gill assisted on the goal. The Merchants then scored five consecutive goals to put the game out of reach for the Colonials. The resort squad staged somewhat of a comeback in the third with goals by Tom Richardson, Laye and Steve Kadlecik but it proved to be too little, too late. Dan Stanlake and Anderson assisted. In Friday’s game played in Zurich, and won by Parkhill 6-2. Grand Bend was never in the game as the Merchants scored the first six goals of the game. i The first Colonial goal came midway through the second period as Becker scored with some help from Stanlake and Kadlecik. With but 24 seconds left in the game Paul McGuire scored an unassisted goal for the Colonials. Wednesday’s game was a much closer affair with Grand Bend holding a 3-1 lead until early in the third period. Starting the Colonials off on the right track was Ed Grenier with a goal midway through the second period. Datars and Bob Lovie assisted. After a Parkhill score, Grand Bend scored two goals to regain their two goal lead. Anderson and Grenier with his second goal of game scored with help from Steve Schroeder, Layeand Datars. After two Parkhill goals in the third period, the game went into overtime with Schlegel scoring the win ding goal for Parkhill at the 9:06 mark. In the Colonials only win of the series, Laye scored four goals to lead the team to a 6-3 victory over the Merchants, Tuesday in Zurich. The other Grand Bend goals were scored by Jim Guenther and Grenier. The first game of the series saw the Colonials loose 4-2. Desjardine and Datars had the Grand Bend goals. plays and both came on rebounds after initial stops by goalie Scott McNair. The Hawks hit the scoring column at the 1:46 mark of the second when Brian Taylor was perfectly positioned at the side of the net to deflect a point shot by Randy Fisher into the cage. Dave Bogart also drew an assist. Exeter had a two- man advantage on the play as two penalized St. George players couldn’t get back into the play to stop the drive although their time had elapsed. The tying goal came near the end of the period, when Fisher blocked a shot, fed a pass to Taylor who pulled the defence to one side and fed Matt Muller a perfect pass as he cruised in front of the net. The Hawks were playing short-handed on that tally. The winner came after only 32 seconds into the third period when Taylor fed Phil Knight a pass at the point, and the lanky defender came up with another of his patented rushes as he deked two defenders and blasted home a shot from about 20 feet out. Ken Pinder scored the clincher mid-way through the period on a power play effort with linemates Fred Mommersteeg and John VanGerwen. The Hawks picked up 11 of the 20 penalties called. STANLEY TWP.
