His rink-long dashes have featured his play in the league, while his size prompts many opposing forwards to get rid of the Cuck as they near the Exeter lueline. Phil scored the win­ ning goal against/Aitchell on Friday and was tied for the top scoring output in that series with two goals and six assists. Rec playoffs now underway Algoma Tire scored a 3-1 victory over Pfaff Electric in the first game of the Exeter and district Rec hockey league playoffs Tuesday night. The second game of the . best-of-three series will be played tonight, Thursday. Les Pines and MacLean- Passmore meet’ in another first round playoff tonight. The Guess Who and Team No. 6 meet in the other quarter final. The first two contests will be played Tuesday at 9.30 p.m. and Thursday March 30 at 9 p.m. Pfaff Electric wound up in first place in the regular standings with 34 points, one more than the runnerup club Algoma Tire. Les Pines was second with 27 points and MacLean-Passmore Tvas fourth with 12 points. Team 6 was next with 10 points and Guess Who completed the standings with two points. The regular schedule ended Thursday with Les Pines downing Algoma Tire by a score of 9-4 and Team 6 blasted MacLean-Passmore 7-1. In Tuesday’s first playoff game, Pete McFalls, Bob McDonald and Toni McDonald each scored one goal to lead the Algoma Tire scoring. The lone reply for Pfaff Electric came from the stick of Randy Gilfillan. Bantam Il's get first win The Exeter bantam II squad posted their first win in the Strathroy Olympics, Wednesday, pounding Both­ well by a 12-1 margin. The team also has a tie in four outings. Mark Vandergunst paced the attack in the scoring spree as he registered a hat trick. Rob DeKoker, Mike Murray and Scott Pincombe fired a pair of tallies each, while singles came off the sticks of Trevor Boyle, Scott Batten and Alan Hodgert, On Tuesday, the locals dropped a 2-0 count to Glencoe. In their opener in the Strathroy tournament, Saturday, the locals watched Strathroy score two goals in the last minute and 15 seconds to record a 4-4 tie. Trevor Boyle started Exeter off on the right foot in the first minute of the game, and after Strathroy came back with two tallies, Exeter moved ahead by a 4-2 count. The final three goals for the locals came off the sticks of Rob DeKoker, Mike Clark and Steve Prout. Playing against Byron on Monday, Exeter II dropped a 3-0 verdict, allowing their opposition two goals in the first and an insurance marker in the final minute of the third. In a weekend series with Trenton, Michigan, the locals dropped a 6-4 verdict on Saturday and were drubbed 9-4 in Sunday’s contest. Scoring for Exeter in the first encounter were Mike Clark, Mark Vandergunst, Jim Siddall and Alan Hodgert. Vandergunst had a pair in Sunday’s loss, while singles came off the sticks of Trevor Boyle and Steve Riddell. The Exeter lads hosted their Michigan counterparts overnight, while the parents got together for a social evening at the Riverview Estates recreation centre. Registration is open to new and experienced players of all ages from Grand Bend and surrounding areas. The club will hold two pre­ season registration days, The first sign-on date is in downtown Grand Bend at the Canadian Legion Hall between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25. The following Saturday, April 1, will see a further registration session at the Alhambra Hall in Bosanquet Township, again between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Anyone requiring further information should contact Ed Mommersteeg in Grand Human love knows no cau­ tion. Bantams win three at Strathroy, in contention for Olympic gold The Exeter bantam entry remained in the running for the gold medal at the Shamrock Olympics this week as they posted three wins and a tie in their first of seven games. The tie came Wednesday morning against Mooretown, a team which had beaten the locals by one goal on two occasions in other tour­ naments. Exeter gained the 1-1 split on a goal by Bill Glover In their Saturday opener against the home squad from Strathroy, the locals rebounded from a 2-1 deficit early in the contest to post a 4-2 victory, Ed Willis sandwiched a goal in between the two Strathroy markers and then Exeter potted three in a row to cap the win. The other markers were fired by Dave Jackson, Pete Tuckey and Wayne Smith. Dave Bell assisted on two of the four goals. Under the guidance of Clarence Boyle, Exeter posted a 4-0 win over Atom all stars beat novice in exhibition Parkhill in Monday’s action. It was Boyle’s first ap­ pearance behind a players’ bench in 15 years. Dave Underwood gave Exeter an early lead in the contest and the locals rammed in three more in the third as Rich Fletcher posted the shutbut, Bill Glover scored two of Exeter’s final three goals with the other being registered by Rick Lin­ denfield. Pete Tuckey helped on two of the markers. On Tuesday Exeter potted two goals into an empty net in the final minute to post a 4- 1 verdict over Glencoe. They scored twice in the second frame with Wayne Smith and Dave Jackson blinking the light, but Glencoe counted one in the third to set the stage for the. final minute try at evening the count by pulling their goalie. Bill Glover hit the net on the first attempt and Dave Bell added another in the final seconds. The Exeter atom houseleague all-stars beat the local novice team by a 3-0 margin in an exhibition contest at the rec centre Sunday. Both teams were preparing for tournaments this week. The novice will play in Lis towel and the houseleague atoms will be performing in Seaforth, Marty Taylor paced Sunday’s win for the older lads,'scoring a pair of goals and assisting on the third which was registered by Ken Boersma. * -r Dean Murray also drew an assist on the Boersma tally. Four Hawks share playoff scoring Four players led the Exeter Hawks in the scoring department in their recent six game series against the Mitchell Hawks. Defenceman Phil Knight and forwards Brian Taylor, Matt Muller and Fred Mommersteeg each ac­ cumulated eight points. Muller was the top goal getter with five successful shots while Knight and Taylor along with Ken Pinder collected a half dozen assists each.
