HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1978-03-16, Page 11• Atoms make another try to win OMHA semi-final The Exeter and Lambeth atoms squared off for a “do or die” fifth game in their OMHA zone semi-final at the rec centre, Saturday, and when the doing was done, neither team was dead. They battled through a 2-2 overtime tie and will now square off for another do or die effort in Lambeth for the right to enter the final. That sixth game was played last night in Lambeth. It was their second victory on their opponents’ rink in the series. The teams battled through a scoreless tie in the first two periods, but Steve Gould blinked the light for Exeter early in the third on an un­ assisted effort. Lambeth knotted the count with just over five minutes remaining, but Gould came back with his second of the night at the 13:59 mark to cap the win. Scott Lovie and Bill Fisher drew the assists on the play. In the Saturday thriller at the rec centre, Steve Gould started Exeter off quickly when he was sent into the clear off the opening faceoff and hit an open corner with only six seconds gone. Scott Bogart had the assist on the play. • Lambeth evened the count later in the opening period and then Exeter came back in the second when John Wells found the range in a scramble. Brett Batten and Bill Fisher drew assists. The locals maintained their slim lead until the 3:30 mark of the final frame when Lambeth blinked the light to send the game into a 10-minute overtime. The Exeter midgets dropped a 5-4 overtime verdict to Lambeth, Saturday, in the final game of the Shamrock playoff “A” tournament. The win gave Lambeth the gold medals. Playing on their home ice, Lambeth jumped into a two- goal lead before Preston Dearing found the range on a play with Dave Atthill and Doug Brooks in the final seconds of the first. The teams traded goals in the second with Wayne Parsons blinking the light for Exeter on a play with Atthill and Dave Bogart. Exeter then evened the count at 3-3 when Atthill scored from Brian Mercer and Bogart, but Lambeth regained the lead with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. After pulling their goalie in favor of an extra attacker, Exeter sent the game into overtime when Mercer found the range on a play with Dearing with 43 seconds left. Lambeth scored the sudden-death win at the 3:28 mark of the extra session. Exeter gained the final r round by ousting Dorchester earlier in the day with a 2-0 shut-out. Both Exeter tallies came in the final period, the first off the stick of Dearing and the second being registered by Bogart. Brooks and Dearing drew assists on one tally each. Steve Wells and Doug Hoffman shared the net- minding duties to post the whitewash. Lambeth gained a bye into the finals when Belmont withdrew from the playoff action due to OMHA com­ mitments. In an exhibition contest at the rec centre, Wednesday, Exeter posted a 5-3 win over Seaforth, overcoming an early two-goal deficit. Scoring for the locals were Dave Atthill, Wayne Par­ sons, Jeff Fuller, Doug Brooks and Dave Bogart. The latter and Preston Dearing had two assists. Pfaff regains top in recreation loop Pfaff Electric regained first place in the Exeter and district Rec Hockey league as the result of a 7-3 win over MacLean-Passmore Thur­ sday night. The Pfaff team has 34 points, one more than second place Algona Tire. Les Pines is third with 25 points and MacLean-Passmore is next with 12 points. In the other game this week, Les Pines swamped Guess Who 15-1. The regular schedule winds up tonight Thursday with a doubleheader at the South Huron Rec Centre. Algoma Tire meets Les i Pines at 9 p.m. and MacLean-Passmore take on team number 6 at 10:30 p.m. Dennis Bierling, Brian Hodgins and Randy Gilfillan each scored two goals to lead Pfaff Electric to their latest victory. Adding a single score was Bob Pinter. Paul Brooks fired successful shots MacLean-Passmore Gary Lovie added the counter. Larry Haugh’s five goal performance was best for Les Pines. Dan McIver and Martin Overholt each picked up a hat trick and Ron Moore and Gord Beuttenmiller scored two goals each. The lone marksman for Guess Who was Gerry Court. Stephen club loses twice A four team Optimist hockey tournament held at the Huron Park arena Saturday was won by the Southeast London Optimist club. The host Stephen club lost both games. They were defeated 7-1 by Bryanston- Birr and were edged 13-11 by East London.
