Stephen Optimists host hockey tournament
By TOM LESSARD
The Stephen Optimist Club
has been organized since
January 29 and has so far
reached a number of it s
objectives. Committees have
been formed and the
majority of the members
have been appointed to tasks
pertaining to these. Each
member is required to assist
his committee in whatever
way possible to the best of
his ability when he can spare
the time. So far everyone is
to be congratulated for their
efforts.
The hockey tournament
held Saturday in the Huron
Park Arena, sponsored by
our club was a huge success
even though near the end
some of our guests ran into a
bit of difficulties which have
since been corrected.
Thanks to all who attended
or participated.
Winners have been
declared in our club motto
and logo contest held bet
ween the grade 7 and 8 pupils

will be an annual event with
Stephen Central and
Precious Blood schools
participating. Thanks to all
the children, teachers and
members who contributed
their time and effort to make
this our first contest a

Dear Editor:
I would like to comment
on the legal strike by
members of U.A.W. Local
1620 against Fleck Manufac
turing.
If the police are not taking
sides, as they claim, they
sure are doing the manage
ment of Fleck a great ser
vice by the arrest and
blackballing of Al Seymour,
U.A.W. international
representative, from
Stephen Township.
This is a first time con
tract for these members and
as in such cases the
members rely greatly on the
experience and knowledge
of their international
representatives in the
negotiation of this contract,
as well as official represen
tation on the picket line.
The reading of rights and
conduct of strikers to the un
ion members, before they
were even on strike, by the
police and the use of 20-25 of-
ficers, some from
detachments as far away as
Goderich and Sebringville,
to control 60 or so picketers
isn’t anything else but in
timidation.
On Tuesday in the Ontario
legislature,Labour Minister
Bette Stephenson, when ask
ed, said she knew nothing
about the trouble at Fleck
Manufacturing. Again on
Thursday, when asked, the
minister said she knew
nothing about the com
plaints of the workers about
health and safety conditions
at the Fleck plant.
However, on Tuesday,
when Canadian U.A.W.
Director Dennis McDermott
demanded an investigation
into the relationship
between deputy minister
James Fleck and Fleck
Manufacturing Ltd., Bette
Stephenson said Wednesday,
less than 24 hours later, that
Mr. Fleck was in no way in
volved with the situation.
How fast the minister can
move to clear one of their
own, but can be so ignorant
and derelict in the duties
and responsibilities of her
office.
This strike is rightful, as
the worker has the just right
to a living wage no matter
what he/she are engaged at.
The present wage paid at
Fleck Manufacturing is
definitely not such a wage
■and the proposed increase,
by management, of 10$ a
year, for the next. 3 years is
not only inadequate, but an
insult to the workers.
As for the present sick
benefit of $30.00 a week, it is
totally inadequate to meet
with present day costs.
As for Mr, Turner rejec
ting the issue of union
security, he is just stating
that he doesn’t want the
workers unionized. For,
then management can
promise anything and not
deliver, as the workers at
Fleck, I am informed, know
from past experience.
The only way to remedy
this is with an union con
tract that binds the company
to their obligations.
. Sincerely,
Stuart Graine
