Times-Advocate, 1978-03-16, Page 2Page 2 Times-Advocate, March 16, 1978 Hucksters to stands Despite increased atten dance at Exeter Hawks playoff games, the large in flux in fans isn’t showing a resulting increase in sales for the South Huron rec cen tre concession. With that in mind, members of the board decid ed this week to get some hucksters into the stands, and some of those board members will be among those calling “popcorn, hot dogs, softdrinks”. The idea was presented by Jerry MacLean, who noted that' with packed stands, people don’t leave their seats at intermission to get refreshments in fear they’ll lose their vantage points in the stands. MacLean proposed that board members get some baskets and take the con cessions to the stands to generate sales. He and chairman Bob Down agreed to work at Tuesday night’s playoff game. Bruce Shaw and Howard Pym indicated they could not attend, although the latter suggested he would consider helping in the future. It was recently explained to the board that people attending hockey games spend an average of 54 cents at the concessions. Thirty percent of that is profit for the board’s operation and MacLean expressed concern that the figures were drop ping due to the fact people didn’t want to risk losing their seats. Board members will also be going out into the area in the next few weeks promoting the use of the hall for Christmas parties and other special events. “It’s like a business and we have to go after it,” MacLean suggested, noting that the board should start now in promoting use of the hall for Christmas parties. Members were agreeable to his suggestion to visit area firms to seek reser- vations for parties/ agricultural meetings, etc. At Monday’s meeting, the board met with four representatives of the Ex eter Agricultural Society to come up with rental terms for this year’s fall fair. Fair board members in atten dance included Roy Pepper, Don Bray, Norm Whiting ‘ and Dalt Finkbeiner. It was tentatively agreed that the board would turn over proceeds from the Sun day afternoon western jam boree as payment for use of the facilities for the fair. Clean-up will probably be an additional cost to the fair organizers. The proposal will be given to the agricultural society members for their con sideration. The board also agreed to give a six-month trial to a proposal by Exeter police constable Kevin Short to operate a non-profit weight lifting and exercise program in the storage room at the hall. Short will provide the equipment and has agreed to work around special events at the hall. Stephen council Stephen has agreed to limit the number of buildings on any lot as part of the zoning regulations in the new secondary plan. Only one house will be allowed to be constructed on any lot anywhere in the municipality. A severance application from Gerald Love for Lot 11, Concession 19 was given ten tative approval. In last week’s report of Stephen township council, an error was made in the amount of the grant given to the Huron Plowman’s Association. The correct figure is $50 and not $500 as reported last week. A resolution from the town of Markham asking the Ontario government to allow municipalities to retain the right to licence businesses within their limits and collect fees for same was supported. □ □ The illness you'll never see coming.
