still down in playoff
Exeter’s bantam II squad
travelled to Pelham to con
tinue their OMHA playoff
this weekend, returning
home with a split in the two
games.
The locals evened the
best-of-five series with a 5-3
win on Saturday, but
Pelham regained the lead
with a 4-3 triumph on Sun
day.
Fourth game in the
quarter final series will be
played at the rec centre this
Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and if
the fifth game is necessary
it will be at 12:30 noon on
Sunday.
In Saturday’s opener at
the Nia’gara Falls area
town, the locals scored two
goals in the last three
minutes to win their first
game of the series.
Mark Vandergunst fired
the winner on a play with
Mike Clark and Bruce Shaw,
and then the latter two set
up the insurance marker by
Mike Murray in the last
minute.
Scott Pincombe and Shaw
had given the locals an early
2-0 lead, but Pelham evened
the count and then scored
again after Murray had
Monday to
Frida
scored his first of two in the
final period.
Drawing assists on the
other three goals were Jim
Siddall, Steve Prout, Jamie
Chaffe and Clark.
Exeter jumped into a 1-0
lead in Sunday’s game on a
goal by Al Hodgert, but the
home crew then rattled four
straight into the cage before
Exeter came back late in
the period to pull to within
one tally.
Jim Siddall and Mark
Vandergunst were the
triggermen on the final two
tallies, while picking up
assists were Pincombe,
Chaffe and Clark.
Split in playoff
The squad also competed
in the Shamrock “B”
playoffs this week, winning
one of two contests. Their
third game was defaulted to
them by Dorchester.
In their opener at Lucan,
Thursday, Exeter ended up
on the short end of a 4-3
count with Belmont.
Scoring for Exeter II were
Rob DeKoker with a pair
and Mike Murray.
The following night, they
tackled St. Marys II and
came home with a 5-2 vic
tory.
Murray paced the attack
with a pair of tallies, with
singles coming off the sticks
of Mike Clark, Jim Siddall
and Steve Prout.

They managed the feat with
a hard-fought 3-2 win over
their arch rivals from
Lambeth.
In the final game,
Lambeth jumped into a 2-0
lead in the second period,
and appeared to be heading
for a playoff championship
to go with their league title.
However, Exeter fought
back and whittled the lead to
one goal when Ed Willis
blinked the light in the final
two minutes of the middle
frame on a play with Tom
Coates.
Rick Lindenfield scored
on an unassisted effort early
in the third to even the count
at 2-2 and Pete Tuckey
capped the victory with a
tally with just over a minute
remaining in the contest.
Dave Bell and Dave
Jackson picked up assists on
the winner.
Exeter gained a berth in
Saturday’s final with a 4-1
win over Ilderton on Thurs

Saturday, winning both their
contests in the “B” division
event.
In the opener, the locals
posted a 4-1 victory over
Lucan and then copped the
silver medals with a hard-
fought 2-1 win over Belmont.
In the opener, Steve
Laithwaite put Exeter into a
•lead mid-way through the
first, but Lucan came back
to knot the count on a
marker by Jeff Shipley.
Scott Brintnell fired the
eventual winner in the se
cond and Darren
Vandergunst and John Ker-
nick added insurance
markers in the third.
Laithwaite, Ted Oke and
Brent Atthill picked up
assists on the goals.
In the final against Bel
mont, who had beaten Lon-
don, Exeter again took an
early lead on a marker by
Chris Van Gerwen with Ker-
nick drawing the assist.
Belmont evened the count
in less than 20 seconds and
the teams battled on even
grounds until the 3:30 mark
of the final period when Ker-
nick broke in alone to dent
the twine.
Peter Dearing came up .
with several key saves in the
contest to preserve the win.
