Most Canadians are un
aware that Canada is in
danger of breaking up,
Robert McChesney, past
president of the Royal Cana
dian Legion, said in a policy
statement Saturday announ
cing the start of a country
wide campaign to promote
national unity.
“There must be a prompt
and significant change in at
titude in every part of ourt
nation,” he told a joint*
meeting of union officers
from Ontario and Quebec.
McChesney said the
legion, with 500,000
members and 1,800
branches, has decided to
take a leadership position in
attempting to influence
public opinion to preserve
Canada as a nation.
He said a special com
mittee will visit the 10
provinces to brief legion of
ficers and study local issues
affecting unity.
Next week the committee
is expected to present a
brief to the federal Task
Force on Canadian Unity in
Ottawa.
McChesney said the brief
would call for redefining the
Canadian constitution and
the inclusion of linguistic
and-other fundamental
rights.
It also would suggest
changes in the electoral
system and provision for
provinces to have; greater
say in appointments to the"
Senate, the Supreme Court
and certain federal agen
cies.
McChesney said he
believes legion members
will accept these changes to
regain the confidence of
fellow Canadians in Quebec.
“We also hope that this
evidence of fair play will
convince those who are not
currently supporting the
federal system in Canada
that there is indeed hope and
that the necessary changes
will be made,” he said.
“If anglophones, by their
goodwill, understanding and
support for change, can en
courage a majority of
Quebecers to vote against
separatism, then a giant
step forward will have been
taken by Canada.”
