Residents of the police
village of Dashwood learned
at the annual ratepayers
meeting Monday night that a
water system is coming
closer to reality.
Trustee chairman George
Tieman said he was assured
Friday by Huron-Middlesex
MPP Jack Riddell that
engineering work on the
project would begin this
year.
Tieman said village of
ficials met with the Minister
of Environment George Kerr
in September and asked for a
speedup of the project.
Kerr said the estimated
cost of $1,100,000 was
outrageous for a village with
a population of 400.%
Tieman said he un
derstands the province is
prepared to proceed with a
smaller system that would
not include a water tower at
about half the original cost.
After the engineering work
is completed with estimated
costs a public meeting will
be held to allow all Dash
wood residents to consider
the proposal.
The trustee chairman said
the engineering could take as
long as one year with a
possible construction start
sometime in 1979.
In other discussion
businessman J. M. Tieman
asked where the monies
from business tax went.
When told it goes to either
Stephen or Hay township
depending on location,
Tieman said, “they should
subsidize the village and
have these monies used for
snow removal. I have spent
$50 this winter in removing
snow from the front of my
store. We don’t get any
return for our business tax."
During 1977 the village
appointed Irvin Rader as
building inspector and
instituted their own building
bylaw.
Trustee Tieman com
mented, “We didn’t object to
the townships controlling
building permits but we
never knew what was going
on. I’m sure they are happy.
Irvin has issued more per
mits than ever before.”
Asked by Ninia Kraft if
permits had to be obtained
from the townships, Tieman
replied, “No, Irvin can issue
a permit right on the spot.

sponsored by the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority. Above, Becky and Joanne
McAlpine are ready to enjoy a snowmobile ride. T-A photo
The trustees commended
the village firemen and the
Friedsburg Days committee
for providing an addition to
the fire hall and purchase of
a tanker truck.
George Tieman added,
“we are lucky to have these
people. The hall addition and
tanker only cost the village
$1,000 and a building per
mit."
Asked by Rheinhold Miller
if the village was required to
pay Zurich for assisting at a
recent fire, trustee Harold
Schroeder replied,“no, that’s
part of mutual aid we have
with Zurich, Crediton and
Exeter."
Schroeder reported that
the volunteer firemen do not
receive any pay for fighting
fires within the village. The
rates for out-of-town calls
are $5.50 per hour for chief
Emil Becker, $5 for assistant
chief Don Bender and $4.50
per hour for each firemen.
The village does provide a
dinner for the volunteer
firemen each year to com
pensate for their free ser
vices within village limits.
The financial report
showed a surplus for 1977 of
$3,851.52. Trustee Tieman
explained this was due to
only $66 spent on roads and
sidewalks. This work is
being h eld up until the water
system is completed.
Similar to all public
municipal meetings, the
subject of dog control was
brought up by Syd Baker.
George Tieman answered
“This is a problem. Stephen
is now advertising for a dog
catcher since the London
Humane Society stopped
their services. Hay township
has never had a dog catcher,
so all the animal has to do to
be safe is run over to the Hay
side.”
