Defer action on wind surfers
Want beach left noncommercial
Grand Bend council
reaffirmed its intentions of
keeping the beach area non
commercial when it took no
action on two applications
for the operation of the
rental of wind powered surf
boards.
The first application which
was received from John
Bortsher -asked for per
mission to rent catamarans
and wind surfing units off of
the beach.
Bob Simpson echoed the
sentiment of most council
members when he said
“Nothing should be rented
off of the beach.”
Council directed Clerk-
treasurerLouiseClipperton to
send a letter to Bortsher
informing him of council’s
feelings and that the village
would re-examine the
proposal providing that an
alternate site for the rental
of the units could be found.
Mark and Debby Stuart
appeared before council with
a similar proposal and met
with a similar reaction from
council.
The young couple said that
they would be renting three
■ to four “surf-sailers”
space located in
Lakeview Casino.
Stuart explained to council
that Burlington and Toronto
had allowed the rental of the
units from their public
beaches this past summer
and that instruction in the
use of the units would be
provided.
Once again, the non
commercial status of the
beach came up with Reeve
Sharen saying that the
family atmosphere of the
beach should be preserved.
The reeve said that the
village had had some bad
experiences with com
mercial enterprises using
the beach with the most
recent being the para sail
operation a few years ago.

Councillor Bill Baird said
that he was afraid of the
precedent which might be
set if this operation was
permitted. “How could we
stop further commercial
enterprises from operating
off the beach?” Baird asked.
Council deferred any
decision on the matter until
next council meeting when
Stan Louden and Mr. and
Mrs. Stuart will show films
of the craft in operation.
