Says farmers
in big trouble
Speaking to the Alliston
Rotary Club recently, Peter
Hannam, President of the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, warned that the
first signs are beginning to
appear showing that the
province’s agriculture in
dustry is in serious trouble.
Bank loans to farmers rose
by 250 million dollars, to a
total of one billion dollars, an
increase of 28 percent. Total
farm debts are now nearly
two billion dollars.
Mr. Hannam pointed out
that “Farmers are not
borrowing to expand. They
are borrowing to survive.”
