RENA CALDWELL KIPPEN The January meeting of Kippen UCW was held Tuesday instead of a week earlier because of weather and road conditions. Fifteen ladies gathered in the Sunday School room for a delicious pot luck dinner. Again roads and weather conditions kept some from attending. The worship period in charge of Mrs. Bert Faber was based on the 121st psalm, two hymns were sung with Mrs. Ross Broadfoot at the piano. Mrs. Faber closed this portion with prayer. E. Kyle. Various reports were given and Mrs. Stephens installed the ladies accepting new offices for the coming year. Fees were collected and the regular collection was taken. Mrs. David Cooper thanked everyone for making this meeting so meaningful. The meeting closed with a sing song and prayer. A social half hour with coffee was enjoyed. Wl entertain seniors Kippen East Wl en­ tertained the senior citizens of Hensail to luncheon at noon January 18 in the Legion Hall, After dinner an autograph contest was en­ joyed, the winners being Dorothy Mickle, Ruby Bell and Bert Horton. The president, Margaret Hoggarth, chaired the meeting and opened with a New Years poem. A skit was presented Drummond Alderdice on Taker.” Margaret Hoggarth and Frances Kinsman also presented a skit. Grace Drummond gave a reading, Mary Broadfoot contributed several piano numbers. Verda Sinclair gave the Sunshine report. Phyllis Parsons gave the treasurers report. Charlotte McDowell gave current events and courtesy remarks. Jane Thompson invited all to opening ceremonies which consisted of repeating the purpose of the group and the motto and singing of “This is my'Father’s World”. Counselor Mrs. Wm. Froats presented the second gold star to Jane for at­ tendance and learning the books of the New Testament. All others are to learn theirs by January 30. The girls sang Valentine and “The Church is wherever God’s people are Praying.” We discussed what we discovered about the Caribbean from the displays. The exchange started three years ago when Bernie Bedard, a native of Zurich, moved to the USA and began coaching boys there. McGraw saying Mass. It was a well attended meeting with 25 members present. The guest speaker for the evening was Father Gus Kandathil from India. Along with some help on this side of the ocean, he instigated the “Save a Family Plan.” With this aid, a family can start to help themselves. Otherwise all the family’s effort is put into today’s meal. He had a film to show the progress of at least 700 people “adop­ ting” a family. People from all over North America have written to St. Peter’s Seminary in London to get information on this project. The CWL gave Father Kandathil $550 which were the proceeds from their Christmas mini bazzar. A letter from the CWL’s national president on por­ nography and bill C 207. was read. Every member was asked to write to their Member of Parliament telling them that they sup­ port the Bill. Mrs. Anita Giesen reported that a van load of clothes was delivered to a center in London to be distributed where needed. United Church The Lucan United Church Friendship Unit opened the New Year with a meeting Wednesday. They report a fantastic number of twenty one members. The guest speaker for the evening was Mrs. Jean Brown, the minister’s wife. She spoke of their five years in Angola and showed woodcarvings which the people had made and which depict their life style. Two members of the Friendship Unit have been asked to be on the committee for the Learning for Lent program. The Learning for Lent series is an annual program put on by the United Church during Lent and is an excellent op­ portunity for learning a craft and socializing with your neighbors. The weekend before last, the American boys were in Lucan staying with their Canadian opponents, while their parents bunked in at Holiday Inn in London. This past weekend two busses of Lucan players and their parents enjoyed the hospitality of the Sterling Heights people. The boys played two games Saturday and two Sunday. Saturday evening the S.H. parents treated the group to a lovely . Mrs. Bernie Van Bussel pot luck supper. The annual meeting of the United Church was held Friday evening in the church basement. A pot luck supper was served prior to the meeting. The children en­ joyed skating in the rink after supper. The Kirkton-Woodham Snow Blazers held a run through the country side Sunday afternoon, retur­ ning to the community Centre for refreshments. The United Church Women held their meeting Wed­ nesday evening. Mrs. Percy Brown was the speaker and gave a very interesting talk.
