Want policy on storm closings
Grand Bend council decid
ed Monday night to ask En
vironment Canada to make
improvements to the Grand
Bend harbour.
Council had made
preliminary inquiry about
possible improvements
several months ago, but the
subject was brought up
again when a letter read
from Terrance Copeland on
behalf of all of the
fishermen in the village,
Copeland’s letter said,
“What we feel is a safe har
bour is one that will allow
fishing tugs to enter the har
bour safely with moderate
off-shore winds.
Grand Bend has always
been a dangerous harbour
because of sand bars caused
by large waves from a
north-west direction.
The fishermen want im
provements so the harbour
will be usable without
jeopardizing our boats and
men.”
Copeland suggested the
situation could be corrected
by placing two large rock
piles about one-third of a
mile outside the entrance
similar to those used at
Leamington and Point Pelee
in Lake Erie.

Grand Bend council will be
asking the Lambton County
Board of Education to issue a
policy on school closing
during severe winter storms.
Councillor Harold Green
brought the subject up at
Monday’s council meeting.
Green said he and four other
parents were very concerned
about young children
walking to school on mor
nings when visibility was
poor and they were forced to
walk on the sides of the
roads.
Green said on one par
ticular day when buses did
not run only 36 students
showed up for classes. All
were from the village
proper. He added, “All
teachers were doing that day
was providing baby sitting
services.”
Green continued, “The
board is putting the onus on
the parents for children
going to school. We should do
something as a council”.
Reeve Bob Sharen com
mented, “The only thing we
can do is ask for a consistent
policy.
Councillor Keith Crawford
who is a teacher at SHDHS in
Exeter said he kept his
children home during the
storm but added, “If the
school was closed there
would be some calls asking
why?”
On the subject of parking
of cars on village streets
hampering snow plowing
operations, council decided
towing away of vehicles
would be left to the
discretion of works foreman
Gary Desjardine.
Reeve Bob Sharen said,
“We need stricter en
forcement. Road committee
chairman Keith Crawford
added, “Gary is about ready
to have some towed away.
They have had enough
warning.
Councillor Harold Green’s
comment was, “We have
made a policy, it’s stupid if
