Spotlight
Less than four weeks remain until the fifth annual
Exeter Lions Club Sportsmen’s dinner is upon us.
Each year the Lions are able to come up with an
excellent array of top notch speakers and this year is
no exception.
Normie Kwong will be the headline speaker for
the dinner to be held Tuesday, February 7 at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
Kwong was better known as the China Clipper when
he roamed the backfield for the Edmonton Eskimos in
the Western Conference of the Canadian Football
league.
Two performers in the 1977 Grey Cup game in
Montreal will be in attendance at the local dinner. One
is Glen Weir who was named the top defensive player
in the Grey Cup game and since named to the all
Canadian team.
The other is John Konihowski, a flanker with the
Edmonton Eskimos. Also representing football will be
former Toronto Argonaut backfielder Bill Symons and
the Toronto club’s present general manager Dick
Shatto.
Representing the Toronto Blue Jays will be rookie
sensation Bob Bailor and one of the team’s hardest
working pitchers veteran Dave Lemanczyk.
One Canada’s brightest stars at the 1976 Olympics
in Montreal was pentathlon competitor Diane Jones.
Diane who is now married to footballer John
Konihowski will be in Exeter earlier in the day of
February and will be appearing at South Huron
District High School. She will be showing an Olympic
film and talking about track and the Olympics.
The’game of hockey will be represented by former
NHL great and former Maple Leaf coach Red Kelly
and Larry Jeffrey who had a lengthy career with the
Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.
From figure skating comes two of Canada’s
brightest young stars. They are Sherri Baier of
Mitchell and Robin Cowan of Kitchener. Golfer Ken
Doig of Seaforth will also be there.
Keeping the whole show running smoothly will be
master of ceremonies Bill Brady of CFPL radio in
London. Tickets are now on sale from any member of
the Exeter Lions Club and are $25 for adults and $15
for elementary and high school students.
While a number of ladies have attended the dinner
in previous years, a special effort is being made this
year to attract more this year, especially with two
ladies on the guest list.
Receipts for income tax purposes are available.
All proceeds will go to help crippled children.
Good tourney
Everyone connected with this past weekend’s
junior hockey tournament held at the South Huron Rec
Centre should be congratulated on putting together a
very successful program.
The brand of hockey was excellent with the two
area clubs, the Lucan Irish and Exeter Hawks proving
they can take care of most competition.
The Irish won the title be defeating the Hawks 6-5
in the championship contest. It was an exciting game
from start to finish as were most of the other six
games.
Exeter Friday morning by
bus headed for Toronto
International airport.
From there they flew to
Boston and then a 45 minute
trip to Exeter in New
Hampshire.
In their first game
Saturday the locals dropped
a 1-0 decision to Concord,
New Hampshire. The Exeter
club held a good edge in
territorial play and shots on
goal but couldn’t put the"
puck in the net.
Saturday afternoon it was
a match-up between the two
Exeter teams and the
Ontario boys scored an
impressive 5-1 victory.
Sean Whiteford scored two
goals to lead the scoring
attack. Scoring in single
fashion were Bill Fisher, Jeff
Pfaff and Allan Pym.
Sunday morning the
Exeter Ontario club were
pitted against Alexander
Park of Montreal. The
Quebec club had chalked up
decisive wins over the two
New Hampshire teams by
scores of 9-0 and 9-3.
The impressive wins by

The same weekend the Exeter atoms proved they
can hold their own in North American competition by
placing second in a tournament in Exeter, New
Hampshire.
The locals beat Exeter, New Hampshire 5-1, lost
1-0 to Concord from the same state and then held a
strong Montreal Alexander Park club to a 2-2 tie.
The only damper on an otherwise entertaining
weekend for the Exeter boys and their parents oc
curred Sunday afternoon when one of the parents,
Glenn Fisher, suffered a heart attack at the Boston
airport.
Glenn was reported in a stabilized condition in a
Boston hospital, but is expected to be there for a cou
ple of weeks.
Our editor Bill Batten who coaches the atoms
remained in Boston with Mrs. Fisher. We expect him
back by the weekend. Next week’s issue should con
tain much more information on the Exeter trip to Ex
eter.
For this week we were able to glean a little infor
mation on the tournament along with pictures from
films Bill sent back with his wife Kaaren Sunday
night.

The Irish playing in Mt.
Brydges Saturday night
were held to a 7-7 tie. It was
Lucan’s second game of the
day.
The two top clubs have
played the same number of
games, 24. The three point
differential comes from
three more Exeter wins and
three additional ties for
Lucan.
Good effort
The Hawks win over Mt.
Brydges Friday was
described by coach Ron
Bogart as “the best game
they have played this year.”
In the first period each
team scored one goal, but the
Hawks scored three times in
the second session to take a
lead they never relinquished.
Jamie Caldwell chalked up
the first Exeter score on a
pass from captain Steve
Jennison and Brad Glover
replied for Mt. Brydges.
Dave' Kinsman scored his
first of two goals at 4:04 of
the second period on passes
from Brion Penhale and
Randy Parsons.
Later in the middle
frame, Matt Muller con
nected with passing help
from Fred Mommersteeg
and Ken Pinder and Pinder
hit on a pass from Steve
Jennison.
The third period Exeter
goals came from the sticks of
Dave Kinsman and Don
McKellar. Brian Taylor
picked up two assists while
Jamie Caldwell helped on
one goal.
The first two Mt. Brydges
marksmen were Bob
Davenport and Brad Glover.
