T-A photo Lowest of five tenders Beech street contract to Van Bussel Lucan Damages high in four area crashes The contract for recon­ struction of Beech street in Lucan has been let to Frank VanBussel and Sons. The Van Bussel firm submitted the lowest of five tenders at $50,375,. The highest bid was $65,224.18. Engineer Paul McIntyre assisted council in con­ sidering the tenders. He said the original engineer’s estimate was $48,371. The deadline for com­ pletion of the work from Alice to Market streets is August 15. Council agreed* to pay village animal contract officer Howard Curie an annual retainer fee of $1,000. Mr. Currie who has held the position for more than a year will continue daily patrols of village streets. He will also receive $5 for each ticket issued and $5 for each trip with any dogs to the Humane Society in London. The village’s bylaw con­ cerning watering of lawns and gardens is being updated but times and conditions remain unchanged. Use of all lawn and garden hoses with attached sprinklers and watering devices shall be allowed only between 7.30 and 9 a.m. in the mornings and 6.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Councillor Norm Steeper reported that a meeting to update the draft of the going bylaw would be held June 20. Council will be donating a trophy for the Lucan golf tournament to be held June 20 and will sponsor a banquet June 29 to honour the Lucan juveniles OMHA juvenile champions for the 1978-79 season. A donation of $100 was authorized to the Field- Springer flood disaster fund. Works superintendent Doug Johnston reported that an inspection of the water tower has been made by Horton Steel. While the final report is yet to be received Johnson said he was told the tower was in good condition, except for painting. Larry Hotson, council representative on the Middlesex Plowman’s Association said selection of the site for the 1982 Inter­ national Plowing Match would be made within the next month. Hotson said one of the proposed sites is located west of the Lucan village limits. Biddulph township reeve Wilson Hodgins is the Middlesex Plowman’s chairman and Hotson heads the prize committee. Middlesex county weed inspector Hugh Baird has been named to the same position for the village. A white paper on the Planning Act will be discussed at the Ministry of Housing meeting at the London City Centre Holiday Inn on June 26. Councillor Larry Hotson asked council* to keep thinking about proposed traffic lights in the village. He continued, "the com­ plaints about getting across Main street start every summer with traffic to lake country,” Reeve Ivan Hearn said the Ministry of Transportation and Communications will be conducting a traffic count in the near future. Some play euchre Visitors at seniors Officers of the Lucan detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police in­ vestigated four accidents this week with damages totalling $13,000. At 3.40 a.m. Wednesday a vehicle owned by Norman MacDonald, Ailsa Craig was struck by a vehicle driven by Faye Christine Kydd, RR 1, Ailsa Craig while it was parked on Ailsa Craig’s Main street. Constable J.M. Frank set damages at $3,000. The same day at 4.30 p.m. vehicles driven by Alice Dewan, RR 3, Lucan and David Robinson, RR 1, St. Marys collided on Highway 23 at county road 47. Damages were listed at $4,- 000 by Constable Frank. A "’vehicle driven by Theodore Van Gelehken of London went out of control on sideroad 12-13 at Conces­ sion 16 in London township and struck a new bridge. Constable W.T. Hodgins es­ timated damages at $3,500. The mishap occurred at 11:20 a.m. Friday. Constable Hodgins listed damages at $2,500 when vehicles driven by Sabrine Buehring, and Richard Speller, both of London were in collision at 1 a.m. Satur­ day on Highway 4 at the Medway river Bridge. T-A photo Fitness test for 4-H club The Lucan No. 3 4-H Club chose the name "wilderness women” at its meeting Monday at the Vander Loo Home. Club members took a fitness test and built four different types of camp fires before rain forced them in doors. Plans were made for their hiking trip out of Benmiller early in July and the section in the club books pertaining to this meeting was read and discussed. The rain having let up the girls went back outside and finding the "tee pee” style fire had withstood the shower they used it for a marshmallow roast. The next meeting will be tomorrow Thursday at Rita Dewan’s. Members of the Sunshine and Busy Buddies groups met Thursday afternoon for cards and crafts, President Mary Kooy welcomed Mrs. Mae McElwee, a cousin of Laura Toohey and Mrs. Ann McMillan, both of Dearborn Heights, Michigan and Mrs. Minnie Barnes of New Westminster, cousin of Florence Hodgins as guests at the meeting, and birthday greetings were extended to Ethel Crouch and Maurice McDonald. In celebration of the senior citizen’s week, a concert at the Lucan public school was announced when the seniors band will also perform, on invitation of the staff. For transportation be at the Hall at 1:15. tickets on the quilt to be raffled at the Lions’ Club Fair were distributed, YOUNG PEOPLE The Lucan Youth Group met at Holy Trinity Sunday evening, when plans were discussed for the dance to be held next Friday, June 15, at the Legion Hall. Advance tickets are available from group members. A group discussion was held to find suggestions to solve problems. The next meeting will be Sunday June 17 at the home of Carolynn Lankin, Butler Street, 'for a "pool” party. A sing-song was enjoyed and Marie Turner as June social convener organized the euchre with prizes going as follows: Lady’s high, Margaret Carter; Lone hands, Margaret Allen; Low, Laura Toohey; Man’s high, Joe Carter; Lone hands, Ed Dowdall; Low, Lon Phillips. The Busy Buddies completed their basketry articles under the direction of Maisie Boyd of London. Tomorrow, Thursday and June 28 members of the Busy Buddies will make cotton flowers.
