By JOY SCHEIFELE
A new part-time co
ordinator was hired for the
Craigwiel Gardens senior
citizens’ activity centre in
Ailsa Craig last week. Lloyd
Roth, a well-known'long time
area resident was selected
by the senior citizens
committee for the position
and the decision was ratified
by the Craigwiel Gardens
Board earlier last month.
Outlining plans for up
coming programs, Lloyd
explained the committee has

been working hard on an
auction sale planned for
Saturday, May 19. “Another
location was thought of first,
but then we realized that it
would be best to have it right
at the Activity Centre”, he
explained. “The proceeds
will be used to further the
program and it seemed best
to have it right at the set
ting”.
The community is being
asked to donate articles for
the sale and should contact
either Lloyd or Lyle Stokes,
secretary of the senior
citizens committee, for
further details.Items for the
bake sale can be brought on
the day of the sale.
The workshop at the centre
has been the scene of in
creased activity of late. Men
from the community gather
there three times a week to
work on various projects,
using the power tools and
other equipment. Presently
they are working on picture
frames and display boxes for
a couple of local businesses
as well as items for the
auction.
But it is not only the
seniors who are using the
workshop. On a pre
arranged basis a couple of
local high school students
are using the workshop in the
evening to complete and
extend work they’ve been
assigned in their school
work.
For the past several
months Christianview Bible
College has scheduled a
weekly Sunday evening
service at the centre. “We
hope to continue the
program throughout the
summer with more informal
events", reported Lloyd.
"We’ve always enjoyed
Sunday evening concerts in
parks and would like to
develop special musical
evenings for the community
during the summer mon
ths”,
Also in the planning is to
provide transportation one
day or so a month for area
seniors who find it difficult to
get into the city for shopping.
“Often it is difficult for the
older person to shop for
clothes when there are no
clothing stores in town”, he
outlined. “This would give
them an outing as well as an
opportunity to shop for items
not available locally”. The
Craigholme Nursing Home
van would be used to drive
those interested.
With the nicer weather
coming much thought has
been given to the outdoor
shuffleboard on the lawn.
“We want to set up tour
naments and regular games
for young and old alike to use
the court as much as
possible”, he stressed.
The ladies are also hoping
to have a group formed for
regular quilting bees. The
quilts will then be sold with
proceeds being turned back
into the program.
As co-ordinator Lloyd Roth
will be responsible to provide
activities at the centre for
area seniors involving
community residents, senior
citizens apartment dwellers
as well as the more mobile
Craigholme residents.
Born in Waterloo County
he and his wife, Alma, and
family came to the area in
1948 and he brings a rich
background to his new
position. On arrival here he
first farmed west of Ailsa
Craig for four years before
accepting a position to run
the old Craigholme for two
years. When his wife’s health
began to suffer he moved to
Nairn and worked as
custodian at the East
Williams Public School for
seven years driving school
bus at the same time.
He returned to farming for
three years in Nairn, but
when it was evident his
family was not interested in
maintaining a family farm,
he sold it and worked at
Green Gables Nursing Home
for two years. He and his
wife then worked as relief
house parents at Craigwood
Boys' Farm for 14" years,
before semi retiring. On
April 23 he officially began
as co-ordinator of the
Craigwiel Gardens Activitv
Centre.
