T-A photo Catholic ladies elect slate GB youngsters raise funds for Caribbean books GRAND BEND AND DISTRICT NEWS .Pupils at Grand Bend Public School have generously put down their text books for a few minutes every day so that children in the Caribbean can have new text books. The Grand Bend children are staging a kilometre run — three laps around the school yard makes one kilometre — and have sponsors backing them. Principal Howard Hartle says the purpose of the run is two-fold. Primarily, it is a means of raising money. But with warm weather coming, and the importance of physical fitness, Hartle says that the jogging will be good for the children. The pupils will run after school and during lunch hours under the supervision of a teacher. The run will continue until May 31. They hope to raise several hun dred dollars to buy texts for their Caribbean counter parts. An assembly was held Thursday to kick-off the run. The kindergarten, grade one and grade two classes supplied the entertainment. Scott Keyes was the master of ceremonies. Kim Lingard played Little Red Riding Hood in a play of the same name, while Todd Hayter played the wolf, and Kim Crawford was a convincing grandma, complete with nightcap and gown. This was followed with a demonstration by the folk dance club, and another play entitled Peter, Peter, Peter by the junior drama club. The younger children con cluded the program singing several songs. One number featured Michael Clay as a red robin. The two groups met together at the Lambton Heritage Museum, south of Grand Bend. About 60 people attended the joint meeting where guest speaker John Hillman of Sarnia spoke on genealogy. Hillman says that researching family histories has become the third most popular hobby in North America after stamp and coin collecting. Assistant curator at the museum, Chris Andreae says that people are becoming more interested in genealogy. He says that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have made extensive studies in this area for religious reasons, and have made their genealogical records available to the public.
