T-A photo By BILLMcNUTT Opening day of the trout season has again passed by! This year’s opener was far from spectacular. There were no great numbers of trout in the streams and those that were there wouldn’t co-operate with local anglers. Even the stocked trout in Morrison Dam would not bite for the young anglers which braved the weather to try winning a prize in the Claybirds fishing derby. Conservation Officer Jack Overhault informed me that Morrison Dam will receive up to 800 rainbows this season. These will mostly be in the 8 to 10 inch class. They will be stocked in three plantings, the first of which was April 24. Smelt fishermen have had it good this week and hopefully the run will last for a while yet. One of the best places seems to be the pier at Grand Bend, where fishermen with umbrella nets were doing very well. The gun clubs are starting to open and to keep you in formed here is a list of the local clubs and whats going on this year. Fullarton: This club started shooting April 22. They will be shooting skeet Sundays from 1.30 p.m. and trap Wednesday nights from 6.30. The equipment includes manual skeet traps and a new electric trap for trap shooting. At the present time they are charging $1.50 per 25 targets (one round) and do not require a membership, Their range is located about two miles north of Fullarton on apavedroad and all are welcome. Kippen: The Kippen shooters opened April 30 and be shooting Monday nights from 6.30 p.m. They have added an electric trap this year and have installed it next to the existing field. They have also done a lot of work on the club house. Kippen offers trap shooting only, does not have a membership and anyone is welcome. They are located right on Highway 4 at Kip pen. Sputh Huron Sportsman’s Association: This organization is constructing a skeet range on highway 83 two and one half miles west of Exeter, They have not set a date for opening yet but say it will be in May. The traps are fully automatic electric and they are laying out for two fields, the second to be completed at a later date. This is privately owned and will be open to the public on weekends with shooting instructions available for new shooters. There is no membership required and anyone will be welcome. They are also planning a large clubhouse to be completed this summer and plan to be open year around. Another Interesting thing about this group of shooters is that they have a fair number of women shooters. Claybird Gun Club: They have planned their opening for May 12 weather per mitting and will be offering skeet shooting Saturdays and trap shooting Wed nesdays from 6.30 p.m. The equipment includes manual skeet traps and an electric trap for trap shooting. They also have a 200 yard rjfle range and government in spected outdoor handgun range. These are open to mem bers at all times according to their secretary. A mem bership is I® V’■da A required for those shooting handguns. These facilities are located in Hay township on concession 5. The Goderich gun club is privately owned by John Hessels and operating smoothly. They have been shooting both skeet and trap on Saturdays starting between 12 noon and one. Their equipment is all elec tric and anyone is welcome to shoot at $1.50 per round. No membership is required. To get to this club turn east on the first sideroad north of the Goderich O.P.P. office on Highway 21. At the first corner turn left, over the tracks. It’s behind the first white house on the right. It’s a great place to spend a coupleof hours when your up that way fishing on Saturday. Several local shooters shot there Saturday including Randy Stanlake with 23 (12 gauge) for second place. Bob Snell broke 20 with the 20 gauge. My wife and I competed with the .410 breaking 17 and 22 respectively. Two new shooters Lyn Snell on her se cond time round even broke 8 with 28 gauge and Maureen Erb broke 7 with 20 gauge on her first round. All three ladies deserve congratulations as a 17 is a good round for anyone with a .410 scattergun and most first time lady shooters (and many men too) generally break only 4 or 5. pass you by. pfotocross deries May 6th & May 19th June 10th & June 24th Practice 9:30 a.m. — Race Heats 11 a.m. FINALS 3 p.m. $2800 in CONTINGENCY PRIZES $1800 IN TROPHIES Junior and Schoo!
