I would like to again express my appreciation to the many people who make the Exeter Hawks all possible. This year’s version of the Hawks was something special to me as a coach. Many fans, officials and "authorities” had us classed as "alsorans” from the start of the season. "You’ll never get by Mitchell,” "You’ll never get out of your own division in the playoffs.” These were familiar rum blings heard around town. We started last fall with a nucleus of veteran players and many rookies. Right from the start we had our troubles-Steve Beer broke his leg, Brian Mercer broke his arm --football injuries, Randy Parsons hurt his knee at the first practice. Everyone that stayed with us made the team. We tried to mould these players together-we had our problems. Steve Jennison re injured his knee--possibly out for the season. Con troversy arose over the return of certain players. But we arose to the occasion and hopefully solved the problems. We were delegated to "last place” at times but we were in first place at Christmas-- our goal. Sure Mitchell handled us all year and we lost a few key games which Antenna Problems? The Lucan juveniles have home ice advantage for the seventh game to decide the Ontario Hockey Association “C" juvenile championship. The all important title deciding contest will be played at the Lucan arena Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. with Colborne providing the opposition. Each team has won three games, all on their home ice. Lucan took a one game advantage with a fairly decisive 8-6 win on home ice Friday afternoon, but, they were on the short end of a 5-1 score in Colborne Sunday to force the sudden-death contest, Saturday. While losing 5-1 Sunday, the Lucan club stayed in contention until the final minutes of the third period when Colborne pulled ahead. Down 2-0 starting the third period, the Irish youngsters wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard and back into contention. Brian Murray converted a pass from Ken McManus at 2.47 of the final period of play. That’s the way the score remained until Colborne broke the game open in the dying minutes, Steve Jones led the Colborne scoring attack with a three goal effort. Notching single scores were Gil Clarey and Ron Pilsworth. In Lucan Friday the first period was even with each team scoring one goal. Lucan scored four unan swered goals in the middle frame and upped their lead to 7-2 early in the third before the Colborne team got into a scoring mood. Martin Duenk led Lucan in scoring production with two successful shots. Scoring in single fashion were Tom McGorman, Brian Murray, Martin Clarke, Ken McManus, Bob Hodgins and Jim Hayter. Pete Williams and Steve Jones each scored twice for Colborne. Getting one goal each were Jay Mills and Tom Carey. "spirit” and teammorale. We hope we provided an exciting brand of hockey for everyone. Thanks to my wife and family for the time "away from home.” This year has been great in many ways and has been very gratifying to me because all along I believed "We could do it”~ Well we just about did--we have been eliminated in 78-79 but in 5 short months we’ll be back at it again and the familiar "Go Hawks Go” will again sound for 79-80. Thanks to everyone Ron Bogart Coach Exeter Hawks could have kept us in con tention for league cham- pions--but we still believed "we could do it.” Seaforth in 4. "You’ll never beat Mitchell” Mit chell in 7--a super series of Junior hockey. We gained some believers. Belmont in 4 and into the OHA Semi finals, representing the Western Jr "D” league for the third year in a row. We lost to St. George in 6-a team that was supposed to "Blow us out of the rink”, but a difference of 6 goals in 6 games really doesn’t "Blow us out of the rink.” With a couple of breaks along the way we could have continued to the finals. We have been eliminated--but not defeated. The bubble may have burst but I believed right from the start we "could do it”. The Exeter Hawks never gave up-maybe we"let up” but never gave up and that’s what makes the year so satisfying. We saw some players improve and play beyond expectations. Others let down at times. When we were hot-we were hot; when cold-everyone was cold. We stuck together. Although it’s disappointing not getting to the final when you’re so close, I think we can hold our heads high and have nothing to be ashamed of, and we can always say "Wait until next year.” I would like to thank the seven graduating veterans- Ken, Phil, Steve, Don, Jamie, Fred and Randy for your dedication to the Hawks since I have been coach. Thanks to the rest of the team for a great year and I hope to see you back next year playing for Exeter, regardless who is coach. We all did our best and we never gave up. Thanks Hawks for the season-You made it all worthwhile. Thanks to Manager Fred and Trainer Larry for a job well done. Thanks to E.M.H.A. for your spon sorship. Thanks to the Arena Staff. Thanks to Norm Walper for driving the team bus and arranging for transportation. Thanks to Shirley Pratt and Cathy Whiteford for your dedication to the team. Thanks to the Osgoods for your many hours behind the "mike” and on the "switch”. Thanks to the fans who supported us at all times and who have faith in us to follow us even when we were "down.” Thanks to the girls who made the signs. The hustle paid off at the 7:54 mark when Brian Mercer out-raced a defender to pick up a clearing pass from Ken Pinder as the Hawks were killing off a penalty. Mercer’s blast hand-cuffed Mark Northey for the first tally of the game. Less than three minutes later, Preston Dearing fired a liner from outside the blueline and it took a crazy hop between Northey’s legs. Phil Knight and Dave Bogart drew the assists. Just before the midway mark of the second, the Lions scored on a power play on a rebound Tom Fergus took off the stick of Randy Lovie and set off fears that the Hawks would again blow two-goal leads as they had twice in Exeter in the fourth game loss. However, in less than a minute, Dave Kinsman fired in a backhander after taking a pass from Ron Bilcke to regain the two-goal margin and 38 seconds later, Ken Pinder batted in a pass from Dave Bogart in a goal-mouth scramble on a power play. After St. George whittled the lead to 4-2 in the scoring spree, Phil Knight boosted the margin back to three at the 13:34 mark on another of his solo dashes and he pick ed an opening that wasn’t evident to most of the spec tators. The Hawks enjoyed a two- man advantage shortly after, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Just before two minutes had elapsed in the third, the count hit 6-2 for Exeter when Northey lost sight of Phil Kinght’s shot and as he was looking over his shoulder, Terry Caldwell picked up the puck in front of the net and pushed it across the line before the goalie could recover. St. George then moved to the attack, but Randy Lovie came up with some big | ADAMS I I Heating & Cooling | saves to keep them at bay until the 13:10 mark when they dug a puck loose from under his pad and shoved it into the net. They scored again at the 15:47 mark on a power play, but the Hawks shut the door on them from that point to preserve the win. Each team picked up 11 penalties although the Ex eter fans'thought the Hawks drew more than their fair share in the hard-hitting third period.
