The Pfaff team followed the championship triumph with a 5-4 overtime win over Zurich Sunday to win the South Huron rec cham­ pionship. The Pfaff crew opened the Exeter final series with a 7-4 decision over Les Pines. Five unanswered goals after the Les Pines had taken a 4-2 lead proved to be the difference,Jim Rolph opened the scoring for Pfaff Electric in the first minute of play. Ken Bergman then scored three straight goals to put the Pines in front 3-1. Grant Turner scored for Pfaff’s to narrow the score to 3-2 and then John Gillespie scored to restore the Les Pines lead to two goals. Before the second period ended Pfaff’s tied the game on goals by Jim Rolph and Randy Gilfillan. The Pfaff team came out •flying in the third period and scored three straight goals to secure the victory. Randy Gilfillan scored the winner while Bob Pinter and Jim Rolph with his third of the game completed the scoring. The Les Pines squad came back to even the series up in the second game with a 6-4 victory. The Les Pines team facing a do or die situation responded well and came out flying scoring five goals in the first five minutes of play. Gord Beutenmiller opened the scoring in the first minute of play and Bill Farquhar with two goals and singles by Larry Mason and Marty Overholt gave Les Pines their lead. Brian Hodgins got the Pfaff crew on the scoreboard in the second and they narrowed the score to 5-3 by the end of the period on goals by Randy Gilfillan and Brian Hodgins. Midway through the third period the Pfaff crew closed the gap to 5-4 on Brian Hodgins third goal of the game. The score remained 5- 4 until r>- the end when Les Pines defenseman Jim Guenther picked up an errant pass and went in and beat Rob Grant for the final goal of the game to seal the victory for the Les Pines. This set the stage for the third and deciding game played Wednesday. The fans were treated to a well played game and good ending to the rec league season. Unlike the second game the Pfaff team came out and took charge early and carried the balance of the play. Bob Pinter opened the scoring in the first period on a pass from Brian Hodgins. Pfaff’s scored the only goal of the second as Rick Davies scored on a pass from Randy Gilfillan. In the third period the Pfaff Electric crew scored two unassisted goals, the first by Bob Pinter and the second and eventual winner by Grant Turner. With the score 4-0 the Les Pines made a determined bid with less than three minutes remaining as Scott . Burton registered and Ken Bergman added two goals in the final minute. The final one coming with 27 seconds left on the clock. As it turned out, it was to little too late as Pfaff Electric held on to claim the Exeter mens rec league championship! Rob Grant played a strong game as he has all through the play offs, A good team effort resulted in the wih. Closed course cross country motor­ cycle racing begins its sixth season of action and fun at the family motorsport park near Varna. The first event of the ‘79 campaign will be the “Super Digger Motocross,” spon­ sored by the Yokohama Tire Company. The race will stage the top seniors and ex­ perts from Ontario battling for over $1,600.00 in prize money and contingency awards. Riders pre-entered to date include Canadian 125 cham­ pion Alan Logue of Hamilton, and other ‘Top Ten Canadians’ like Bob Levy from Toronto, Alan Jaggard of Burlington, and Jay Kimber of Vineland. Kirk Bigelow of Rochester Michigan, and 1978 Ontario High Point Senior, Wayne Ryerson of Clinton, are only a few who will be challeng­ ing the “big guys”. An add­ ed feature will be the Old Timers’ class to complete the racing program. Race action begins at noon at the improved Hully Gully raceway. Cabins and Camp­ sites are available for the weekend to go with added concession stands, bleachers and Saturday night entertainment to round off the weekend and lots of family fun for the up­ coming season.
