Times-Advocate, 1979-04-18, Page 15Fans consider equal to last two Hawks year a success, despite loss The Exeter Hawks were finally eliminated by St. George in the OHA semi final, ending a season that many of their supporters felt was just as successful as their previous two when they made it through to the final. Friday’s 7-3 loss came in a game that most hadn’t ex pected to take place and was in a series that few had ex pected the Hawks to reach. Despite the four-goal margin enjoyed by the Lions in the sixth game win, the Hawks were in the contest until late in the third period and finally wilted under an intense attack by the fired- up winners. "It wasn’t a case of us playing baldly, they just played, a super game,” Hawks coach Ron Bogart commented after his team was eliminated. The Friday night game was forced after the Hawks scored a 6-4 in St. George on Tuesday. Most Exeter fans had arrived at that contest expecting to see their favorites in their last game, but the locals came up with a solid team effort to throw a scare into the Lions. That win came on the heels of what was probably the turning point in the series, the 6-5 win in Exeter by the Lions, who overcame two-goal deficits on two oc casions. When the Hawks skated off the ice in St. George, Fri day, it marked the final appearance of seven members of the club who had been instrumental in the team’s superb showing in the past three years. Six of the seven had helped the Hawks to the OHA championship in 1977, while all seven were members of the team that lost by one goal in the seventh game in Lakefield last year when they came close to duplicating that feat. Graduating members of the squad include Randy Lovie, Phil Knight, Jamie Caldwell, Don McKellar, Fred Mommersteeg, Steve Jennison and Ken Pinder. ‘‘We’ll certainly miss them next year,” the coach commented this- week in reviewing the season. He said there would be some big holes-to fill on the squad, noting that the graduates had done a super job and had been dedicated to the game. Fans will find a letter from Bogart elsewhere in this issue, lauding his team for their never-say-die at titude this year. Asked if he would be returning for his fourth year, Bogart replied, "If the defending champion Lakefield Chiefs. The Lions drew first blood in the contest on a power play at the 6:13 mark, but Don McKellar evened the count seven minutes later when the Hawks enjoyed a two-man advantage with Fred Mommersteeg and Phil Knight drawing the assists. St. George took a 2-1 lead they (EMHA) want me, I’m available.” That the EMHA will want him is a foregone conclusion. In Friday night’s 7-3 loss, the Hawks kept pace with the Lions through the first two periods, but fell victim to an inspired team in the third as the Lions scored three times to seal their way into the OHA final against at the end of the first when Matt Misener’s point shot found the open comer. They increased the margin to two goals just before the midway mark of the second, but the Hawks JAMMED UP Randy Lovie peeis through the arms, legs and bodies of several players in his attempt to locate the puck in liont of his net m Fiiday s game. Fred Mommersteeg scored the first on a power play with Dave Bogart and McKellar, while Dave Kinsman then converted a oass from Brian Mercer at the 18:24 mark on a spec tacular effort. However, the Lions roared right back and popped what proved to be the winner with just 49 seconds left in the middle stanza and that one appeared to give them a lift as they came out in the third and scored at the 1:06 mark to open up a 5-3 margin. The Hawks continued to press and were thwarted on several good scoring chances, one when Mercer banged a shot that bounced off both goal posts but stayed out of the net. The Lions finally put the clincher in at the 15:20 mark and then added the seventh goal into an open net in the last minute. The contest was extreme ly Jast and exciting, with the Lidns picking up five of the nine minors called.
