St. George Lions, by vir tue of a 6-5 triumph, took a 3- 1 lead in the OHA best-of- seven semi-final and had the opportunity to oust the Hawks in last night’s game in St. George. The Hawks received a gift from the weatherman to get home ice for Sunday’s fourth game in the series. It had been scheduled for Friday night in St. George, but the Hawks couldn’t get out of town due to the weather con ditions. However, they couldn’t hold on to their two margins in the game and watched their hopes of making it to the finals for the third LARRY SNIDER Shimmy in a wheel is a trouble signal. The winners scored the first goal of the game at the 6:40 mark of the first after the Hawks had carried most of the play. A screened shot from the blueline found the corner behind Randy Lovie. Exeter evened the count late in the period when Brad Taylor picked up a rebound off a shot by Ken Varley and had an open net staring him in the face. Terry Caldwell also picked up an assist on the play. At the 8:23 mark of the se cond, Dave Kinsman scored on a similar play. Ken Pinder had sent Brian Mercer down the left wing and the rebound off his drive came out to Kinsman who had an open net and he slid the disc into it. Phil Knight moved them into their first two-goal lead six minutes later on one of the most electrifying solo dashes ever seen at the rec centre. The lanky defender picked up the puck in his own end and elided the entire St. George team as he darted up the ice. He faked goalie Mark Northey out of posi tion and then lifted a back hander into the cage, ear ning himself an enthusiastic ovation from the partisan crowd. However, St. George took advantage of a letdown by the Hawksand came back with two goals in the final three minutes of the middle stanza to even the count at 3- 3. Fred Mommersteeg gave Exeter another one-goal margin at the 3:03 mark of the third when he drilled a shot into the top corner on a play with Don McKellar and Jamie Caldwell. They then enjoyed their second two-goal lead when Brian Mercer teamed up with Preston Dearing to score while they were killing off a penalty at the 8:24 mark. Once again, the Hawks seemed to think they had enough margin and slowed down their attack and once again the Lions took advan tage of the situation to pop three goals and record the win. The tying goal came on power play when Rob Simp son batted a puck out of the air into the cage and the winner was fired by Tom Fergus. Randy Lovie managed to get his glove on the winning blast, but it pop ped out of his mitt and trickled over the goal line. Lovie ended up with 18 saves in the game, one less than recorded by Northey at the other end. The Hawks drew seven of the 13 penalties handed out by referee John Willsie. GAME NOTES - Sup porters on both sides were glad to see Willsie step on the ice as he is considered one of the best officials in the OHA. However, Exeter fans weren’t quite convinced of that at the conclusion of the game when he failed to call a hooking penalty when Phil Knight was hauled down in one of the final last- ditch attacks by the Hawks . . ., "You can’t win if you stand around'and watch", commented a disappointed Ron Bogart, who lamented the lack of hustle shown by some team members after the squad had built up their two margins and then watched them disappear ... if the Hawks win last night’s game in St. George, they’ll go back there for a Friday night game and the seventh game would be in Exeter this Sunday afternoon ... if the Hawks lose, it will still be considered another banner year because they weren’t even expected to win their own division, let alone make it to the semi finals ... the solo dash by Phil Knight in the second fans as one of the great in period on Sunday will be dividual efforts by one of the long remembered by local Hawks. * 1 ' *3 ' MISSED IT — Doug Fischer (19) of St. George missed on this scoring attempt as he couldn't knock down the puck in front of Randy Lovie.
