Times-Advocate, 1979-04-04, Page 14Times-Advocate, April 4, 1979 Play at home Sunday at 2 p.m, Hawks back in playoff contention The Exeter Hawks, displaying some of the skills and determination that enabled them to sideline Mitchell, beat St. George 8-5 at the rec centre, Friday, to move back into contention in the OHA Junior “D” semi- fomal. Trailing 2-0 in the series, the Hawks faced a “must win” situation and were never headed in the contest, although a third period lapse had their supporters slightly worried. The locals still face an uphill struggle to get to their third consecutive final series. They have to win one game in St. George and the Lions have only been beaten once on home ice this season. The series resumes this Friday night when the teams meet in St. George for an 8:30 p.m. contest and they’ll be back at the rec centre on Sunday for the fifth game at 2:00. While some of the local supporters may be hoping a few of the Lions come up with some strange maladies for those games, Hawks coach Ron Bogart may be hoping that the “bug” which hit Don McKellar in Friday’s game sweeps through the team. The Grand Bend area player, who missed last year’s semi-final with St. George due to a broken ankle, was sick to his stomach but ended up pacing the team to thevictorywith a hat-trick performance. He started the Hawks off on the right foot at the 5:14 mark of the first when he finished off a power play with “Fred Mommersteeg and Ken Pinder, added another power play goal early in the second and then ended the Lions hopes with an empty net goal in the third. Mommersteeg potted his first of two near the end of the first on a setup by Phil Knight, and after the Lions got one of those back a minute later, Dave Kinsman scored his first of two at the 17:21 mark after being set up by Brian Mercer. The Lions again came back in short order as they scored in less than a minute on a power play to make the score first. The Hawks continued to dominate the game and scored three unanswered tallies in the middle frame for the cushion they needed. Mommersteeg picked up the first one after only seven seconds of play when he stole the puck from a St. George BIG SAVINGS Hackers, Salon lead in Lucan rec loop By PAUL WRAITH This week in Lucan rec league hockey action Hagen’s Hackers and Salon 174 both went up one game to none as they won their first games of the finals. In the “A” championship final the Hackers defeated the Blues 4-3 on the strength of Gary Revington’s three goals. The Blues opened the scoring in the first as Willy Feke took a pass from behind the net and knocked it past Hacker’s goalie Chuck Fredin. Revington’s first goal tied the game at one apiece as he backhanded a shot past Blue’s goalie Phil Vousden. Revington then scored his second goal in the second period as he again put a shot in the top corner when the Hackers were on a power play. The Blues tied the game as Bill Boshart scored in less than a minute into the third period. Midway through the period Ron Keys scored to give the Hackers a short lived 3-2 • Pens • Calendars • Mugs • Buttons • T-Shirts • Caps • Labels • Lighters • Matches You name it and well supply it with your personal impnnt or 1090 Call Rob Grant 235* 1018 in Exeter lead but Chris Mouritzen evened the count at 3 as he scored less than a minute later. Gary Revington scored what proved to be the winner as he found the net with 1^ minutes remaining. The Blues pressed but were unable to score even after Boshart missed a last minute penalty shot. Revington, Fredin and Boshart were the three stars. In the consolation final Salon 174 defeated the Greens 2-0 in a close hard fought game. Brett Fair weather’s first period goal was enough for the win as he scored after a scramble in front of the Green’s net. Marty Wraith finished the scoring when he scored from the point in the second period. 174’s goalie, Keith Ewer, turned aside 20 shots and the first ever shutout in Rec League play. Ewer, Brad Taylor who had two assists and Wraith were the three stars. Both series will again be decided on a two game total goal series. The final games will be played Friday night and their banquet held Saturday night. On the weekend the Lucan rec league all-stars com peted in a tournament at Goderich. In their first game they defeated the Seaforth “A” team 6-3 but were knocked out of title con tention when they lost 6-3 to Goderich. 3-2 at the end of f BOYS WILL BE BOYS — The Exeter - St. George OHA semi-final has been a relatively clean series to date, although tempers flared briefly Friday night at the rec centre. A few fans at the south of the rink get a dost look at the action which resulted in major penalties for Preston Dearing and Matt Misener. McKellar then potted his second power play goal at the 2:27 mark on a play with Dave Bogart and Jamie Caldwell to increase the lead to three goals and Phil Knight scored the third tally of the stanza when he raced the length of the rink and deftly eluded the would-be defenders. The teams traded goals in the first three minutes of the final session, with Kinsman picking up his second tally of the night when he deflected in a pass from Ron Bilcke. With their 7-3 margin, the Hawks got a little com placent and the Lions took advantage of the situation to score a pair in less than a minute just after the midway mark. However, McKellar took the pressure off when he picked up a puck at the side of the net and lifted an ac curate shot into the open net at the other end to complete his three-goal performance. The Hawks picked up 16 of the 26 penalties called by referee-columnist Ken Werboweski, but held the Lions to one power play goal, while scoring a pair them selves. Included in the penalites were five-minute fighting majors to Exeter’s Preston Dearing and Matt Misner of the Lions. While the Hawks dominated play throughout the contest, many of the shots they did allow were of the point-blank variety, giving Randy Lovie no chance. He ended up with 11 saves, while Northey recorded 20 at the other end of the rink.r On Brand New '79 Ford Light Trucks During Our Annual Spring TRUCK SALE 30-Trucks To Choose From-30 * Super Cabs *4x4 Pickups * Bronco 4 x 4s * 350 One-Ton Cab & Chassis * Excellent Selection of Vans EXAMPLES NEW '79 F1OO FORD PICKUP — knitted vinyl seat, automatic, power steering, low mount bright mirrors, radio, cigar lighter, deluxe wheel covers, heavy duty shocks front and rear, rear step bumper, mud and snow tires.
