The best-of-five series was extended to last night’s sixth game at the rec centre, and another tie between the two teams could force a seventh contest. It’s the second series in a row that the locals have had to play an extra game, giv ing the Exeter squad the reputation of being a “white-knuckle” crew. After the teams split their home games last week, Ex eter rallied for a 2-2 tie in Tilbury on Wednesday and then came home Saturday to post a 3-1 verdict. Needing only a tie in Tilbury, Sunday, the locals appeared to have that ac complished, but the roof fell in on them in overtime as Tilbury scored three times to post a 6-3 win and force the sixth game. The winner of the series will advance to a best-of- seven final with Ernestown, a town in the Kingston area. That series will open this weekend. Came close The local bantams came close to wrapping up the series on Sunday as they came back from a two-goal deficit to tie Tilbury 3-3 at the end of regulation time. However, the Exeter at tack ran out of steam, and hampered by two penalty calls in the overtime, went down to defeat. The game was similar to most of the other contests as Exeter dominated play but failed to get the puck past Allan Barnier in the Tilbury nets. Exeter stormed to the at tack in the first period, but Tilbury potted the only tally and they upped the lead to 2- 0 in the second. The locals got one of those back with just over five minutes left in the middle period when Tom Coates fed a pass back to Scott Batten and Jamie Chaffe was-in the right spot to take Batten’s shot off the boards and put it into the net. Dave Shaw then evened the count when he deftly worked his way through the defence to get the puck past Barnier. Exeter took their first lead after only 13 seconds of play in the third when a rebound off John Kernick’s shot ended up on the stick of Bill Glover and the latter found an open comer on a blistering shot from just in side the blueline. Tilbury came back to get the equalizer two minutes later when a deflection found the mark behind Peter Dearing. Exeter out-shot Tilbury by a 35-16 margin in regulation time, but the hosts jumped to the attack in the extra session as they had their backs to the wall. They scored at the mid way mark on another deflec tion that gave Dearing no chance and they potted their second with 30 seconds left as Exeter pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. The third goal came with four seconds left as the Exeter defence got caught up attempting to get back in the game. Tilbury out-shot Exeter by an 8-1 margin in the over time. the third period with a two- man advantage. Tilbury killed off one of those penalties before Mike Clark deflected a pass from Dave Underwood behind the netminder. Both teams had scoring chances in the balance of the period and into the extra 10- minute overtime, but couldn’t blink the light. Drive carefully ----------------—------- "c Rally for win In Exeter’s 3-1 win on home ice, Saturday, Barnier again had the local shooters talking to themselves as they failed to connect on the barrage of shots they aimed in his direction. Tilbury scored at the 2:49 mark of the first period and held that edge until the third when John Kernick finally evened the count with a quick backhander at the 6:52 mark. His linemates Mike Clark and Dave Underwood picked up assists. Tom Coates registered the winner at the 8:06 mark when his slapshot from the point deflected off a Tilbury defender. Exeter netminder Peter Dearing then came up with some heroics of his own to prevent Tilbury from com ing back as they tried desperately to get the equalizer. He stopped two point- blank shots to preserve the win and Bill Glover finally took the pressure off when he lifted a high shot from centre into an open net for the clincher. Rally for tie In Wednesday night’s game in Tilbury, the local bantams came back from deficits on two occasions to post the 2-2 tie. They started out in high gear and threatened to blow their hosts right out of the rink as they completely dominated play in the first period. However, their at tack was again blunted by some erratic shooting and the fine netminding of Allan Barnier. Tilbury hit the sheet at the 10:34 mark of the middle frame, only to have Mike Murray get the equalizer five minutes later when he tipped in a pass from Jamie Chaffe. The home team took a 2-1 lead with just over two minutes left in the middle stanza, but Exeter got the equalizer when they started r> Tilbury enjoyed a man ad vantage midway through the extra session, but the Ex eter defenders and goalie Peter Dearing kept them off the sheet. g*"...... aar u by ,<&>* ■ i/"5" j I. .■ FRUSTRATED — Dave Underwood, left, bangs his stick and shakes his head after being stopped again by Tilbury's Allan Barnier.
