It’s not often a coach can use a playoff game to loosen up a hockey team or experi ment with lineup changes, but that’s what Exeter ban tam coach Jack Fuller did over the weekend as his team lost the battle but end ed up winning the war. The locals skated to an im- pressive 7-2 win over Walkerton at the rec centre, Sunday, to win the quarter final and send them into the OMHA semi-final against Tilbury. That set opens in Exeter on Saturday at 4:00 and moves to Tilbury for a Sunday game at 5:15. Sunday’s game was the sixth contest in what had started out as a best-of-five. A tie in Walkerton in the third game had forced the extra match between the two evenly matched squads. Exeter won the fourth game by a 1-0 margin on their own ice, Wednesday, but were thumped 6-1 in Walkerton on Friday and not only lost the game but lost centreman Mike Murray when he picked' up a five- minute major at the end of the game and the automatic one-game suspension. The experiment and loosening up of the Exeter team was accomplished on Saturday when they hosted Dart race tightens up With only five weeks of the regular schedule remaining the battle for top spots in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league standings is getting hotter. The team members, who had been under OMHA playoff pressure for 13 straight games, were told by their coach to ugo out ana have some fun” in the Shamrock playoff. The boys helped draft their own lineup, switching all their defencemen to forward positions and mov ing some of the forwards back to blueline duty. They thumped Strathroy 5- 0 with that lineup, but lost 3- 2 to Lambeth in their second game. However, still using an altered lineup on Sunday again Walkerton, the locals broke the game open with three goals in the second period and another three in the third for their most productive game in several weeks. Dave Shaw started the team off on the right foot when he took a pass from Steve Prout to drive a low liner into the bottom corner at the 10:03 mark of the first. Walkerton evened the count in the second, but the winners came back with three in the final six minutes of the middle stanza to demoralize the visitors. They scored three more in the first eight minutes of the third to win going away. Shaw ended up with two goals, as did Bill Glover and Dave Underwood. Glover was moved from his normal defensive position to centre for the game, while Underwood was playing with a case of the measles which broke out on Friday. Jamie Chaffe, another defenceman moved to forward for the game, added the single marker. Glover, John Kernick and Prout picked up two assists each in the win, with singles going to Chaffe and Mike Clark, Glovers second goal of the game came in the final minute of the second with a blast from centre ice and that one seemed to com pletely demoralize the Walkerton goalie and his team mates. Penalties Hurt In Friday’s 6-1 loss in Walkerton, the Exeter crew ..wag s.ubj, ecjed fa,, some questionable "officiating, high-lighted by the high- sticking call to Murray whose stick hit the goalie’s helmet after he had been knocked off balance by the netminder as the final horn sounded. Walkerton scored at 5:31 of the first with a two-man advantage and took a 2-0 lead a minute later with one Exeter player still in the sin bin. They added another at the 8:33 mark and moved into a four-goal lead when an Ex eter defender slapped a puck into his own net in the se cond. Mike Clark scored Ex eter’s lone tally, it coming on a power play with the assist to Glover. One Mistake Wednesday night’s 1-0 win by Exeter wasn’t ac complished until the Walkerton netminder made an error with 53 seconds left in the scoreless game. He and a defender appeared to get crossed up in their signals as to which was going to pick up a loose puck, and when neither of them did, John Kernick rac ed in and with a neat deke, had the disc in the net betore either could recover from the error, Scott Brintnell and Jamie Chaffe picked up assists on the winner, the two having moved the puck into the Walkerton end as the teams appeared to be heading for overtime. Both teams had missed earlier opportunities to CLOSE CALL — Exeter bantam netminder Pete Dearing only managed to get a corner of the puck under his glove in Wednesday's game against Walkerton, but it was enough to prevent the onrushing opponent from pushing it over the line. As it turned out that was lucky for Exeter, as they scored with less than a minute to go to win 1-0 and then came back to win the sixth game by a 7-2 margin to advance in OMHA playoffs. Defencemen Tom Coates and Jamie Chaffe are shown moving in to help their netminder. One of their rebound shots was stopped by an Exeter defenceman as goalie Pete Dearing was out of the play after making the original stop and they missed on one breakaway when the winger shot just inches wide. Lose Shamrock In Saturday’s round-robin Shamrock playoff, the Ex eter lads displayed some strong offence with their altered lineup as they bomb ed Strathroy 5-0 in the opener. Dave Shaw had a pair, while singles were recorded by Bill Glover. Mike Clark and Scott Brintnell. Converted forward Jim Siddall had two assists from his blueline position, while Scott Batten added another in the same role. The other assists went to Glover, Shaw, Chaffe and Scott Pin- combe.
