Now the onus is on the public to realize the progress of the mentally handicapped, as well as other handicapped groups, is impeded not only by the individual’s han­ dicaps but also by ignorance, which has been the public’s handicap too long. Roll call was answered by 41 ladies plus three special guests. Mrs. Ada Dinney reported on the sales from the record Stories of the Bible. All the ladies were encouraged to push the sales. Mrs. Flora Doerr reported on the conferences taking place at Five Oaks in Paris, March 18, 20, and April 22, 28 and all members were urged to take part. A book Blessed are Friends was presented by Mrs. Joanne Wareham. Both Marilyn and Margaret thanked everyone and stated everything received would be very useful in their apartment. an- and April and Mrs. Mavis Athill in­ troduced Mary McLellan from London, supervisor of both group homes in Exeter, the James St. and John St. homes who spoke on why there are group homes. These homes are like stepping stones for the residents towards being on their own. Many things have to be considered when they first arrive at a group home. For many residents even the smallest task is considered difficult. The organization has grown due to the help of the United Church and surrounding community. Mary was thanked and presented with a plant by Mrs. Laurie Shapton. Mrs. Norma Hooper and Mrs. Marion Dougall got everyone involved in a game of activities and a sing song of Irish songs followed. Mrs. Dolores Shapton presided for the worship theme Words. Wonderful Words of Live was sung, followed by Scripture Proverbs 25, V 1-11. Words are wonderful magical things. Gossip is a small word but can do much damage. Cheerfulness and friendliness goes a long way. Kindness oils the machinery of life. Try a Little Kindness was sung, closing with a poem on words and everyone repeating the Mizpah Benediction.
