Play at home tonight at 8 p.m. 1 1 ■ * TrFWa Bantams even with Walkerton The Exeter Legion ban tams maintained their penchant for emotion draining hockey games this week when they opened their best-of-five OMHA quarter-final with Walker ton. The two teams hooked up for three games over the weekend and ended up settl ing nothing. They split the first two games and then tied the third. However, the 3-3 tie the locals earned in Walkerton on Sunday gave them a home ice advantage as they head into the resumption of the series. Walkerton won Friday night’s opener on their home ice by a 3-2 margin, but the locals rebounded for a win at the rec centre Saturday afternoon. The teams meet for fourth game in Exeter tonight (Wednesday) in an 8:00 p.m. contest and return to Walkerton on Friday for the fifth. Either team needs a win and a tie in those two games to advance to the On tario semi-final. If they happen to split those two games, a sixth game would be necessary due to the Sun day tie and it would be played in Exeter, probably on Sunday. All three games have been exciting right through to the final whistle, featuring some wide-open play by both clubs. In Friday night’s opener in Walkerton, the Exeter crew jumped into an early lead when Dave Shaw finished off a play with Dave Underwood after less than three minutes of action. 4-2 on the Instead of bewailing the fact that we can’t have all that we want, many of us should be thankful we don’t get all we deserve. But Walkerton evened the count two minutes later and took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. Shaw came back with his second gaol on an unassisted effort early in the third to even the count, but Walker ton settled the issue midway through the stanza when Jeff Davidson checked an Exeter defender in front of the net and pushed the puck behind Peter Dearing. Saturday afternoon, the Exeter bantams appeared to have the game well in hand when they scored in each of the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead into the third. Mike Murray was the triggerman on both tallies, with the assists going to Shaw, Underwood and Tom Coates. However, Walkerton rallied in the third with two goals of their own to knot the score, setting the stage for an exciting final five minutes. Mike Clark put Exeter ahead to stay at the 12:07 mark on a play with Shaw and Bill Glover and then Clark came back with his se cond of the game with just over a minute and a half remaining to pull the game out of reach. Underwood picked up the assist. In the third game, Exeter had to battle back from a two-goal deficit to gain the 3-3 tie in Walkerton. The home team jumped' into a lead late in the first period on a power play and Exeter evened the score early in the second when they enjoyed a man advan tage. Mike Clark won a faceoff in the Walkerton end, get ting the puck back to Bill Glover, who then passed off to Dave Shaw at the other point. Shaw’s low drive was then deflected into the cage by Murray. Walkerton took a 2-1 lead midway through the middle stanza when Kevin Elliott stole the puck off an Exeter defender to get a breakaway on Dearing and they jumped into a two-goal margin two minutes later on a power play. Exeter pulled to within one late in the second when Bill Glover worked his way around behind the Walker ton net and came out in front to drill a shot into the cor ner. Early in the third, Jim Siddall scored the equalizer when his slap shot from out side the blueline handcuffed the Walkerton netminder. Jamie Chaffe drew the assist. Both teams missed oppor tunities to pick up the win through the balance of the third and a 10-minute over time, being thwarted on oc casions by their own poor shooting as well as some fine netminding by Peter Dearing and Scott Fritz. r A Disputes term 'disastrous' Dear Editor: I am expressing my con cern with regards to the sports report written about the Lucan-Ilderton Jets in the February 28th edition of the Times-Advocate. The first fact I find upset ting is the choice of words. It is of the general opinion of the team that the season was not “disastrous” but may be more appropriately described as disappointing. Disastrous implies a great misfortune, calamity or major adversity. This was clearly not the case. Another serious flaw in the report occurs when facts are stated concerning the past events of the teams season. Firstly the report failed to make note that the general attitude both teams had con cerning the game played on February 25. The game was treated as a joke. Secondly in mentioning the 12 vic tories and 30 defeats, the report failed to make note of some reasons that lend themselves to answering the question, “Why” these games were lost. A little in vestigative reporting would have revealed that for many ganes there were players out with serious in juries and illness. What I presume to be a typographical error, un derscored my irritation with the quality of your newspaper as a whole. Mr. Loveless did not tell the T-A that . . .‘‘The quantity of players is (was) here (there), but, the quality I am not sure about.” The words quantity and quality were crucial to Mr. Loveless statement. The mistake of interchanging them, changed also the meaning. I realize that in the process of the typing out and printing up of a newspaper these mistakes may occur, but, I feel that special atten- ainiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiDon,| Miss T/)e Excitement .... tion should be given to the correctness of a direct quote. All in all the whole report portrayed a very negative tone and misrepresented the team and coach. I hope that in the future all articles con cerning a touchy topic such as sports will consist of a larger degree of in vestigative reporting, and the word of all detrimental typographical errors. Sincerely, Cora Engel.
