By Don Campbell
Executive director, South
Huron association for
the Mentally Handicapped
As much as this Associa
tion is dedicated to the care
and rehabilitation of the
handicapped people in our
homes and our com
munities,
And as much as we will
continue to love and ap
preciate them, and continue
to advocate on their behalf,
There is not one of us who
would not have prevented
any of these children from
being handicapped if it were
possible.
We do not mean to say
that mentally handicapped
children should be prevented
from being born. We are not
advocating abortion.
We do mean to say that
those conditions which are
known to produce mental
retardation should be
eliminated or corrected.
For those children who
are unavoidably damaged,
we are pledged to provide
early and quality interven
tion to minimize the han
dicap as much as possible.
The above information is
the statement of
of the South 1
District Association For The
Prevention of Mental Han
dicapism.
Prevention is the mandate
of this committee. Excess
use of alcohol, tobacco, or
drugs are three of the more
than 250 causes of Mental
f philosophy
Huron and
handicapism.
Rubella vaccine, proper
nutrition and pre-natal care,
home safety, rigid poison
and chemical control
measures, etc. are a few of
the preventative measures
of utilized could reduce the
incidence of mental
dicapism by as much
percent.
Presently, one out
children born in
province experiences
degree of mental
dicapism. The prevention
committee is developing a
han-
as 50
of 33
this
some
han-
plan of action which will
reach the professionals, the
school-age group, the
general public, and very im
portantly, the expectant
mothers.
Rob Grant of Exeter

tion of Mental Handicapism.

Wendy Hardy was tops for
the Hot Tamaleswith a 603
