Times-Advocate, 1979-02-28, Page 7New Stephen resource centre provides activities for all ages Times-Advpcah, February 28, 1979 The Stephen Neighbour­ hood Resource Centre is now open at Huron Park to serve the surrounding com­ munity. The Resource Centre is operating as a job creation project of a Canada Works program until January 8, 1980 and is sponsored by the Family and Social Services of Huron County. Three persons are employed fulltime on the program. They are Liz Beat­ ty who is a social worker, recreation director Lynne Farquhar and Nola Bradley director of the Co-op Nursery School. A questionnaire is currently being circulated to residents of Huron Park and area to determine various programs which could be es­ tablished during the coming year. Mrs. Beatty told the T-A this week, “We are anxious to get this survey com­ pleted. We would ask everyone to return the com­ pleted form as soon as possi­ ble. If you can’t deliver it to the office we will be glad to come and pick it up.” The Resource Centre of­ fice is located directly behind the Huron Park Post Office in the building previously occupied by Canada Manpower. The telephone number is 228- 6302. Information is available by telephone or by a visit from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The co-op nursery school which is in its third week of operation in rooms 16 and 17 of J.A.D. McCurdy School has an enrolment of 30 boys and girls. The cost is $2 per day with a second child costing 50c. Anyone sending three pre­ schoolers can send the third child free. Nola Bradley is in charge of classes each weekday morning from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Afternoon classes will be organized if the need arises. Donations of a variety of articles are needed for the nursery school. Queries can be made to Mrs. Bradley at 228-6373 during the morning or the resource centre in the afternoon. Lynne Farquhar who will be co-ordinating a variety of recreational programs throughout the year said application has been made for a Young Canada Works grant to operate a summer playground for youngsters of Huron Park, Centralia and Crediton and surrounding neighbourhoods. The recreation program will include crafts, sports, physical fitness, etc. and will complement and supple­ ment any other programs being offered by other clubs or organizations, Director Liz Beatty said in addition to the book ex­ change donations of books, toys, paint, wood scraps and numerous materials would be very helpful. Included in the social ser­ vices available are debt, in- dividual and family counselling. Mrs. Beatty added, “We are a referral service for all agencies and will be glad to provide infor­ mation for any community need. If we don’t have the answer for you, we will get in very quickly.” A Block Parent organiza­ tion is now in the process of being formulated at Huron Park. The centre workers are planning on submitting a weekly column to the T-A in­ forming interested residents of the activities available. The following recreation programs are available at present in Huron Park. A teen town club runs every other Friday night from 7-12 p.m. at the Huron Park annex. The group is run and sponsored by the Optimists Club. The Optimists also run a boys sports program. Boys ages 13-18 have the McCurdy School gym every Tuesday night from 7-8:30 p.m. and the program runs for boys under 13 every Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. Free bowling is available for youth aged 5-9 every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Huron Park lanes. Thanks again to the Optimists. A girls sports program run by the Opti-mrs is available for females aged 9-18 every Monday night from 7-8:30 at the McCurdv school. For ladies who are wat­ ching their waist lines, two calorie counter groups are running. Both groups charge $13 for the year with an additional cost of 35c per meeting and 25c per pound gained. Ladies are welcome to attend the first meeting for free to see if they are in­ terested in the program but must join after that. One group runs out of the McCurdy School, Room No. 10 in Huron Park.
